Exploring native materials, podcasts, destinos, la raza, radio, etc are great. But a great thing about structured lessons like Pimsleur, FSI etc. is forced, measureable progression at the proper level (just above what you currently know). Whenever I find myself getting overwhelmed by the sheer amount of what I don't know or how little I understand of native materials and how slow or seemingly non-existent the progress seems, I just throw in the next Pimsleur and all is well.
After doing it once or twice I can say with certainty that I know and remember more than I did the day before, and I am exactly one lesson ahead in my quest to learn the language. It's quantifiable and indisputable progress, which does a body good. It will be a good day when I finish the last Pimsleur, but a sad day as well. Though FSI will take it's place for measureable progression, I won't be able to master a lesson in a single day and have such instant gratification that Pimsleur affords.
I do look forward to the day also when native materials are at the correct level for my learning and I understand most of radio or TV. Then the progress will not need to be so apparent, as I'll be enjoying the process itself more.

I don't know why I didn't focus on finishing Pimsleur before getting into stuff to far ahead of where I am. Pimsleur 3 lesson 15 was today. First taste of subjunctive. Lastima que usted no pueda ir a la fiesta.
I keep noticing that they don't always translate the tenses exactly. I'll have to come up with an example since I can't remember one in detail.
Also, I found out that my library does have the plus course, for what it's worth. And for free, it's definitely worth it.
