I've started studying Mandarin three months ago. I want to be fluent (advanced if possible) right after my exchange in China. So, here's the deal: Fluent by August 15th
Motivations I have a big interest for Chinese culture which could be part of my MA in Comparative Philosophy. I see Chinese as a kind of Latin for South-East Asian languages. It's good for my memory. I like the challenge! What I've done -Gone through le chinois sans peine tome 1 and 2, and l'écriture chinoise though I think I did it improperly. Read and listened every lesson only once. I took it from the public library so I can't keep it anymore, I have until saturday to return it. -Going through Pimsleur I, I'm at lesson 20. -I take one course a week with a private teacher every sunday. It's mostly to learn about the culture as my teacher is a native. We go through one chapter of some chinese handbook which I don't know the name. My current level READING: I recognize many character and can read easily most of the sentences in the Assimil book which doesn't contain much unusual vocabulary. WRITING: I know the sentences but the Hanzi just won't pop up in my head. When I write a character, I mostly forget some part of it. LISTENING: Here's my big difficulty, I understand a great deal of Assimil without but I'm not able to understand any podcast. I distinguish some words in every sentences but that's all. SPEAKING: My forte, I think that I pronounce quite well. But, sentences just won't come to my mind if I'm to speak with someone (which I almost never done). CULTURE KNOWLEDGE: Followed a course on Chinese Imperial History. Bought two books on Asian Philosophy, read le monde chinois by Jacques Gernet. What I'll do During my trip: Total immersion for three months: Two months in Hunan provinces with languages and culture courses and one month traveling throughout all China, so there I'll try to pick up some expressions in other dialect. (I'll be going to Shanghai, Xi'an, Beijing, Chongquing, Guangdong, Hong-Kong, Macao, Chengdu, Kunming (not in this order :P) I won't use English nor french during my trip. Before I go: Finish at least Pimsleur 1. Study with what I have of my teacher handbook. Study with flashcards Watch Chinese movies I'll speed rush as soon as I finish my exams at University. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Today I listened to 30 minutes of RFA podcast, didn't understand anything except some words, I guess it's still good to practice my ear like that, am I right?
