I should have done a log post when I began my Old English odyssey back in January, but I guess I didn't really
count it as one of "my languages" because honestly I was only taking the course to satisfy a university
requirement for my linguistics major. The course was advertised as a course in which the students would learn
to read Old English after only one semester of study (with a dictionary). We went through all aspects of the
grammar at warp speed. One thing I didn't expect at the beginning is that the course was mostly self-study--a
first for me. We used Moore and Knott's text, which was first written in the 1950s--very, very old school. It was
a bit of an adjustment for me to become disciplined enough to learn Old English independently, but by the end I
was sticking to my fifteen-minutes-a-day schedule pretty religiously. Honestly it's the only way to get through
that amount of grammatical material in one semester. I've just completed my final exam for the course and I am
rather pleased with how it turned out. Not perfect, but I believe I accomplished the goal set out for the course. I
can translate from Old English now and I know the ins and outs of the grammar. If someone would have told me
six months ago that this is where I would be today, I would have laughed. I never had any intention of learning
Old English, but I had to for academic reasons. I can't say that I'll stick with it. I think this log begins and ends
here. I much prefer to study modern languages because I like the various media and "current" material available
like newspapers, books, TV, etc. Although learning Old English was a nice introduction to the Germanic family.
Hmm...maybe German might not be a bad idea? =) We'll see...
