My summer vacation from college starts today. After taking 2 semesters of German, I've assessed my abilities and came up with the following:
My grammar is decent, I have a strong grasp on the cases and all verb conjugations of all tenses(except subjunctive, which I'll have to learn over the summer)
My vocabulary is very basic, reading anything is difficult without a dictionary.
My listening comprehension is terrible. I can hear the words but cannot put them together to create a sentence fast at all.
My reading comprehension is hit or miss. I can often read a passage perfectly, but then the next passage will puzzle me even if I know all the words. I'm quickly seeing the weakness of classroom only study.
GOAL: I have until the end of August before my German 201 class starts. I will have roughly 8 hours a day spread between German and Spanish, although I doubt I can reliably spend that much time on language learning without suffering burnout. By the end of summer I wish to have much improved reading comprehension, with the ability to read, at minimum, B1-B2 level material without having to use a dictionary for every other word. I also wish for my listening comprehension to be improved to the point where I can follow a conversation with a German speaker without having to stare off into space for 10 seconds after they finish to piece together everything they say. I would also like to be able to speak without having to think forever to put my sentences forever.
MY PLAN: I have Berlitz Intermediate German, which I've quickly learned is not geared toward intermediates at all, but towards intermediate beginners. The book is useless, but I imagine I can get some use out of the dialogues on the CDs.
I purchased a couple bilingual readers, but they have not arrived yet so I cannot attest to their quality.
I have the entire series of Fokus Deutsch to use for my listening comprehension, as well as several German radio stations and the Deutsche Welle Deutsch Aktuell page.
I have the FSI basic German and DLI Headstart videos, but I haven't tried them yet and have no idea where I should begin on them.
Any recommendations would be great, and hopefully I'll have some major improvements this summer.
