Hellishly difficult to find something useful for Norwegian, both in internet and undernet. And I am going to Norway in the summer and of course it would be pleasant to exchange a few words with native speakers.
What I need: A dictionary for some 10000 words – only with full transcription (I am never sure if I pronounce them correctly, and it makes me nervous) Original literature (fiction, preferably) – the only text by Hamsun I found seems to have obsolete language. Comprehensible grammar reference, and textbook, whatever. I had the same problem when I started learning icelandic a few months before heading over to Iceland on a 6 weeks vacation. I was only able to find a very basic icelandic-english dictionary and a full course package form the Teach Yourself collection. I believe they make a set for bokmål norsk. I had a pretty good experience with the set for icelandic.

The best Norwegian learner's dictionary I know of is Lexin. Note than even though there is no Bokmål-engelsk on the list, if you use e.g. Bokmål-russisk, it will show translations both in Russian as well as in English. Or perhaps you speak Russian anyway, since you're from Moldova. Good thing is that there are example phrases for almost every word, and that they are also translated. There are phonetic transcriptions, but keep in mind that this is not IPA, but rather something that takes Norwegian phonology as a starting point. Most important differences are (roughly): Lexin -> IPA o -> u a -> ɑ å -> ɔ u -> ʉ rn -> ɳ rt -> ʈ rs -> ʂ rl -> ɭ kj -> ç sj -> ʃ v -> ʋ r -> ɾ ng -> ŋ ":" is a vowel length sign, as in IPA. Some vowels change their quality a bit when pronounced long, you can read about it in Wikipedia. After you learn a bit, you can start using the monolingual dictionary (Bokmålsordbok) too, which has more words. When you come to the stage of speaking with natives, I recommend using Lexin to learn the most popular Nynorsk words. Many Norwegians speak dialect that is quite to understand for a learner of Bokmål, and most of them cannot or don't want to switch to something easier for a non-native.

The most popular textbook here in Norway is Cappelen textbook series: "På vei", "Stein på stein" and "Her på berget". I used them for self-study and it worked quite well, even though they are meant to be used at classes. I don't know anything about their availability out of Norway. hey! I must say I love the way norwegian sounds and the pronunciation, on youtube there is a girl that makes some norwegian language videos, I cannot remember the address right now but if you search for basic norwegian phrases you'll be able to find it! In addition, viking history absolutely amazes me!

The second is a site with Norwegian lessons. The third is a collection of video interviews in Norwegian using everyday language with transcripts and a glossary. Last one is a basic dictionary, no audio though... If you have an iPod/iPad etc, there is one called "Collins Mini Gem Norwegian-English dictionary" which has audio and goes both ways but no contextual examples of the words are given. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||||||||
