It can be used as an escape, but if no immediate action can be taken to make the parts
of your life that suck better -- escape is good! (Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of Now"
and all -- don't spend time dwelling on things you cannot take immediate action to
change)

I actually consider language learning to be in a very different class of activity from
watching TV, etc., the common man's escape forms. Fundamentally, I believe that all
free-time activities come in two flavors (and shades inbetween):

(1) Activities which distract the mind and keep one from boredom, but which, once
completed, leave a person exactly the same as if he had never partaken in them at all.

(2) Activities which occupy the mind and body, but instead of merely preventing
boredom, they affect change -- transforming one's possible future paths and potentials
forever.

Examples of (1) are watching TV or movies, chatting with friends about topics one chats
about every day over and over almost like a repeated dance, eating a meal which is the
same as one normally eats

Examples of (2) are language learning, watching TV or movies as a subject of study --
developing oneself as a 'film critic' etc., conversations with friends one has never
had before and which lead to new understanding of the world, study of subjects like
evolution or physics or philosophy which can forever alter one's perception of and
understanding of the world around him

Most people indulge in #1 type activities to excess, because it is effortless and
comfortable. It is also the least rewarding. #2 takes effort, but it is also the only
type that brings great and deep satisfaction.
