23.01.10 was German day.

German:
-input ~100 more words on personality into Anki (but did NOT review them all :) 25 new word limit!)
-read another chapter and some change of ,,Geld ohne Zinsen und Inflation;" I'm up to chapter 5 out of 9.

Spanish:
-audio clip: "En el museo"
-probably half of the cards due in Anki (I know, tsk tsk)

So, I know Saturdays are supposed to be Russian days, but I did not have the concentration for Russian today, to be honest. I flew back to my university today, unpacked, caught up with friends, haha real life, you guys know the drill. But ah, is it good to be back!

Second, a little victory! (Oh gosh, this is just for me, for anyone who really knows Spanish and listens to what I listened to, you'll laugh at me over the internets. Quabazaa, I'm looking at you, kid.) However:

My audio comprehension of Spanish is quite poor. Especially humbling are the Audiria clips, which I think do a fantastic job of putting authentic Spanish conversation--with all of the slurring, fumbling over words, and slang--in their podcasts. In fact, today I was all geared up to write: "Survey: For people who use Audiria, how many people consistently understand the male speaker? Is it just me?" But I suppose it is just me, because today I understood the clip! Not 100%. And I still don't feel psychologically relaxed listening to the language, confident that I'll understand it. But today I understood 95% of that clip without the transcript. I know, it's a little pathetic--"Las Compras." But here is my little record of the event. Goal: To laugh at this in 9 months with incredulity!

Aww trust me, I'm not laughing! Ypu're doing well don't worry :) After I saw you write this I tried out Audria (had only heard a few clips on LingQ but never visited their site... how did I not know about it?! lol) It's definitely not that easy!!! I consider my Spanish to be quite good, but mixed with the accent I'm not so familiar with, I don't think I understood 100% on first listen. I do need more practise with the accents from Spain! Every time I meet my friends from Spain we are in chaotic noisy bars and I usually get lost way too fast, Audria should help at least a bit :)

Btw there isn't something like that for German is there?

And also: OMG 200 new cards on Anki! I'm so glad you changed that XD I have quite a few decks (like 10) so my new cards are usually 10 or less.

24.01.10 was a German day.

German:
-reviewed maybe half of Anki cards due (there's still a bit of a backlog)
-L-R from "Schau ins Land 18.2:" ,,Die Nachrichten"
-half of chapter 5 from ,,Geld ohne Zinsen und Inflation"

Spanish:
-one article: "La carretanagua"
-one audio clip: Audiria: "En la televisión"
-Edit: I went through all of these cards in Anki, I almost forgot!

Thanks for the reassurance, Quabazaa. I look forward to when those clips start to click consistently.

Hello Sprachjunge, you have a very organized, detailed and interesting language-log! I love the title--Sharp Knives--very good! I realize now that I might have named my own log in a better way: "Clumsy Ladles," maybe, or even "Shovels o' Stuff." I just never considered the symbolic potential of hand-tool imagery. Anyway, it is interesting to see how you handle studying three languages at once--I'm just starting to do that now. I might try your routine of one language per day, once I'm beyond the basics of The Big Scary Language!

But, speaking of scary, there's one thing I need to know: what German book is this? I must read it!

Quote:
One had the neighborhood children scaring a blind organ grinder so much that he broke his organ and cried. Another had a fat kid (described that way numerous times by the author) whose father finally told him, "Look, some people in this world are just fat. You are one of them." And so the child goes out to play and is happy that the kids call him "Fettkloß" (roughly, "fatty")! Still another had a mentally slow child asking for flower seeds so that he could plant a garden for his terminally ill, bedridden mother(!). The main character gives the kid weed seeds instead. (Not marijuana, silly, real weeds.)

Now that's good reading!
I was always happy to get back to school, too!

26.01.10 was a Spanish day.

Spanish:
-input roughly 50 words into Anki from "Psychological Conditions" and "Disabilities" from Must-Know Spanish
-read two articles: “Humacao, la perla de Puerto Rico,” and “Colonia del Sacramento”
-input the sentences from "El barrio gótico de Barcelona" (from yesterday) and "Humacao..." (from today) into Anki
-listened to one Spanish clip: Audiria: "Pidiendo el libro de reclamaciones"
-writing sample on Lang-8: "La Carretanagua"

German:
-audio clip/article: SIL 18.2 ,,Salzburg im Mozart-Jahr“
-writing sample on Lang-8: ,,Die Mozartkugeln"

Some notes:
I love the LingQ clips, really I do, but somehow it's easier for me to study from books, so I do it if I can. I broke down a few weeks ago (while my German friend was here) and purchased "Read & Think Spanish," which is essentially LingQ in book form: there are over 100 articles with glossary lists on the sides of each page so that you don't waste time looking up unknown words. And 29 out of the 100 articles are read at native speed on the accompanying CD. So, that's where these combo article/audio clips are coming from.

I also purchased essentially the same thing for German a few years back, but it was a language-learning magazine. There are only about 10 articles per edition (and I have 4 or 5), but they are all read aloud by native speakers and have accompanying glossaries. The series is called "Schau ins Land." I'm currently on 18.2, so that's what SIL 18.2 means.

Since I am trying to read one Spanish article a day, it just seemed logical to start including one German article with it, since they both take maybe 5-6 minutes each.

Sprachjunge - I'm wondering about studying multiple languages on an intense level. I read your initial post where you laid out your schedule for your three, but how is it working out? Do you take breaks between languages in a given day? I see that you denote "01/01 is a Spanish/German/Russian day" - does that mean you are listening only to that language that day, or the grammar emphasis is on that language?

Do you find it difficult to "switch gears" so-to-speak or are the languages different enough that this is not a problem? I'm digging around the site to find tips on studying more than one language, but I like your style and methods, so I wanted your opinion on your process. I'm just wondering about fitting two more languages into my brain (along with my last term of undergraduate study).
