Regardless of what you ultimately end up doing in regards to your language study, you're welcome to be a honorary member of Team H for Hanyu, which we all know is many times cooler than M for Mandarin anyway. Sprachprofi and I are clearly following your thread already!

I might just have to take you up on that offer. Team M seems to have fallen apart. :(

What kind of Chinese music are you listening to? I always have a hard time finding Chinese music that isn't quite so soft pop. But I also haven't looked very hard, so I'm sure there are lots of great bands out there that I just don't know about.

I agree, it is hard to find Chinese music that isn't soft pop; it seems to be just about the only music genre coming out of China! I have been listening to Faye Wong (王菲) a lot lately. Though her music would probably be classified as pop, she also has her own unique style of music, plus a voice to die for.

The third member of the team H also keeps track of your studies. You have been doing really well!
You know, here in Russia English teachers are also welcome! I'm one of them, though non-native. I think, having majoured in linguistics, you'll surely find a teaching post abroad. Have you considered taking CELTA or smth similar?

Honestly, I had never heard of CELTA until you mentioned it. I will definitely look into that possibility. :) Russia would certainly be an interesting place to teach, but мой русский очень плохой!

All right, I promised myself I would come up with some medium-range goals to pursue. Here they are, in order of importance:

1) Finish Remembering the Kanji. I'm currently reviewing all the characters I've learned so far, and am about done with that. I want to work at a pace that will allow me to finish the book by the end of February, but not so fast that I forget what I've just studied.

2) Work through my Integrated Chinese textbooks that I've barely touched since college.

3) Read my Spanish-language book, Soy ateo. I also have a book in French and a book in German, but this one is the shortest, and it will be the first time I've ever completed a whole book in a foreign language that was intended for native speakers. I could sure use the motivation boost from finishing that book, and my Spanish could certainly use some attention. Ironically, though I've studied German more intensively and more recently, I still find Spanish easier to read than German, because of its Latinate lexicon.

Not much to report on, except that I've really been focusing on Remembering the Kanji. I'm two-thirds of the way through the book now, and less than 700 characters remain to be learned. The end is in sight, and I'm just sprinting for the finish. I'm really eager to get into learning real Japanese, and I feel knowing all the Jōyō Kanji right off the bat is going to be a huge help. I want to start seeing these guys in context, to start using them and pronouncing them.

When I'm done with the book, I want to start Assimil's Japanese with Ease. I have a number of other Japanese resources on my bookshelf too, so we'll see what happens there. I'll also work on my other medium-range goals listed above.

I am systematically going through all the old ChinesePod episodes, and saving the dialogs to my iPod. I want to keep the dialogs playing, randomized, when I can.

I'm also making steady progress with Remembering the Kanji, and am now about three quarters of the way done. I may not finish the book before the end of the month, but I'll definitely be done before spring.

I haven't really done much with my other languages, to be honest. Chinese and Japanese, being newer languages to me, are more exciting than the others which I have become accustomed to already. From now on, I'm going to make a point of studying at least one European language daily in addition to Chinese and Japanese. I'll probably focus on one language at a time and switch it every now and then, rather than settling on a schedule where I study one language per day.

I was flirting with the idea of indulging my wanderlust to break the monotony, but I can't really do that to myself right now. Dutch will have to wait. Five language is enough.

I thought I had thanked you for the music recommendation, but I hadn't, so: 谢谢! I've
seen pictures of her before, but I don't think I had ever heard her music, so it's nice
to put a voice to the face.

I know where you come from when you talk about neglecting 'older' languages and feeling
wanderlust; I'm actually having that problem right now, and it's very hard to resist the
temptation to look at Croatian or Middle Egyptian or who knows what instead of good old
Mandarin. I'm bribing myself into doing more Chinese right now by looking at more short
texts, mostly fiction, which are more interesting to me than newspaper articles and hold
my attention better than long novels. I like to think it's a good compromise.

Hey guys, I apologize for my lack of activity both in my language log and on this forum. I've been extremely busy with my university semester, but I'll done my final exams by the end of April, and I'll resume learning Mandarin in May.

Do you guys have suggestions for good materials for reading and writing for the mandarin language? I know there are tons of them online, I just wanted to if there are the 'best' study materials to use.
