After a very lengthy decision-making process, I've decided on Italian. I wish I could say it was because of x or y reasons, but I can't. I simply want to learn the language, for the sound of it, the lack of negativity towards it, and...because it may help with advanced college in the future.
After a semester of college Spanish, I realized I really didn't care for it. Sure, I got my A, studied about three hours a week, and found that a month after my class ended, I couldn't really remember much. I liked the transparency, to a point. Italian didn't strike me at first. I had bought the Pimsleur (S&S Edition on casette) Italian I years ago, but never got around to it. Couldn't let a deal like that slip away ($7). I listened to it the other night and enjoyed it in a way I couldn't seem to with Spanish. Sure, the usefulness of it could be called into question, but so could most of my hobbies. All of them take a very long time to learn, but are satisfying in the end. My goals for Italian aren't as lofty as many of the individuals here. Being able to communicate adequately (reading, listening and speaking) to enjoy myself on a trip or two. I plan on reducing my accent within reasonable levels. I'm not a native speaker and don't feel the need to try to be. Now, I need to excuse myself to listen to my lesson for the day. Take care. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Well, good luck, I am also learning Italian and I realise that there are other languages
for which it would have made sense to learn first but as I have read here countless times before form other people, you are not going to learn a language unless you are attracted to that language for some particular reason. If you are drawn to Italian, then go for it. I tried a few pimsleur lessons but stoppoed after a week or so. The pace was too slow. I enjoyed the Michel Thomas course much more and would definitely recommend the assimil course once you have finished with either of the others.
