Perhaps, if I start a learning log, it will prompt me to study more. So here we go.
For now, I'm studying Esperanto. I've also using some "flash card piles" (or whatever I should call them) in Supermemo for Pocket PC: -French (one collection for vocabulary, one for grammar) -German (one collection for vocabulary, one for grammar) -Russian (only about 100 items, once in a while I add another one) -Spanish (only about 40 items, I rarely add any) -Esperanto (vocabulary and grammar mixed) On a good day, I go through them all. On a lesser but still decent day, I only go through Esperanto. Today I've done them all except German, but the night is still young. Yesterday was a big day: after adding some text to the Esperanto Wikipedia and sending an email in Esperanto, it felt like I now have one more language which I can use. That feeling is better than sex... it even beats winning at chess. Part of it is that I've found a good (methinks) grammar and spell checking website: Lingvohelpilo. Also, after finding that the sentences that I added to Vikipedio were accepted, it feels like I now dare to publish what I've written in the language. Vikipedio is one of the Wikipedias set up so that all content is reviewed before being made public. This system is also used in some other Wikipedias, notably the German one. I also use the Esperanto version of Firefox when I surf the web. That gives me a little bit of extra exposure. Moreover, I've managed to make my way through a couple of books and booklets in Esperanto. This is "extensive reading", I don't look up every word. So I added another very short page to Vikipedio. In the process, I learned four new words.
Now I think I'll call it a day. I've also spent some time today on this forum, arguing with people who know very little about Esperanto and feel a strong need to express their disdain for it. I don't understand the reason for this: if you don't like a language, please ignore it, but why bash it? 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Don't worry about them. You may want to read Claude Piron on why people display so much more hostility towards people learning Esperanto rather than people learning Turkmen, or even Klingon. Lingvohelpilo is a very recent project and not perfect yet, but it's reasonably good. You can also post stuff on lang-8 or write to Lernu's lingvohelpantoj to get corrections for written Esperanto. Once you feel comfortable enough, you may want to try translating the subtitles of a Swedish movie that you feel has been unfairly ignored by the rest of the world and upload the Esperanto subtitles to filmoj.net . I can put you in contact with exceptional Esperanto speakers to proofread the subtitles. Typically Esperanto speakers choose people from outside their language family to proofread things that matter, in order to catch mother-tongue influences. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

I just found out that my additions to the Vikipedio page on Kvakerismo (Quakers) passed the test. That was the very first time I used the passive verb form (Se iu estas emociita...) and the page has now been cleared for all audiences. Would it be better to download Esperantilo, instead of using Lingvohelpilo? I might well use Lang-8 again in the future, I've used it a little for my French. I'm registered on Lernu, and need to start doing the exercises again. One day I might look into subtitles for filmoj.net. However, I'm a very text-oriented person, so writing on Vikipedio is closer to my heart. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

It's been a few days, and I'm overworked. However, I keep doing small pieces of study.
Today I wrote a letter in Esperanto, and learned several words along the way. It feels great to be able to express myself in the language, even though I'm still very slow. Unfortunately, it turned out that a sentence which I knew was incorrect was not corrected by Lingvohelpilo. I'm now using Esperantilo, which at least finds more faults. I've also reread one chapter in "Vikipedio por vi", to find out why I had trouble with adding an image to the Vikipedio. I also got the chance to speak some French, with friends from Kongo-Kinshasa (and a few words with some Lebanese).
