A common broker enjoys with her the nights of love which she refuses me. seems (to me) to be translation of Diligit ipsa alios, a me fastidit amari; Institor, heu, noctes, quas mihi non dat, habet! Thank you. The reason I ask is that my friend is doing research on history of brokerage. Since he doesn't know Latin, he thinks Ovid's "Ars Amatoria" (URL in my first message) mentioned a person whose work was comparable to that of a broker, probably purely based on the word "broker" in the English translation. Do you happen to know if an "institor" in Roman Empire at the turn of BC to AD would do the work of both a peddler and a broker? Nowadays these are two different types of work. Thanks again for your time.

I don't happen to know. But a quick Google search using, for example, "first century institor" as keywords led to some links that your friend may find useful.
