Hello all, I am rather new here, and just recently, I decided to challenge myself to learn all four major Occidental Romance languages, well... three, as I already speak Spanish. I have made decent progress, as I am semi-fluent in French and can understand Portuguese without any problems. Italian has proven to be more difficult, and I was wondering. Should I first polish off my French before taking a shot at fluency in Portuguese? I fear that if I get too engrossed in Portuguese I might lose some of my French.

I would advice you to get your French well working, and then go back to Italian. Italian is perhaps the most complicated of the romance languages. Many learners do not think so because they never learn enough to touch the real complicated stuff.

But French and Italian have many similar constructions, like the partitive article and preverbal enclitic adverbs and the vocabolaries are very similar.

If you're already "semi-fluent" en français you should work to get to the next level in that language. Maintain your Spanish. Spanish and French will serve you well in acquiring Italian. When I was living in Sydney, with my Italo-Australian girlfriend, as the only anglo in an almost entirely Italian district, I found it quite easy to understand her immigrant Italian parents with my Spanish and high school French. Speaking is another matter entirely.

Now I am learning Portuguese and find it fascinating. Knowing Spanish definitely helps as I am learning Poertuguese with Spanish as a base. It will always be there for you at a 60% discount to acquire when you are ready to do so.

Bon Chance mon ami! Boa sorte amigo!
