I understand that a lot of Indonesian words came from Arabic and English words. I am wondering whether more Arabic words were borrowed or English words in the formation of the Indonesian language. I'm not fluent in Indonesian, but my understanding is that the borrowing of Arabic words into Indonesian is mostly because of the influence of Islam in the archipelago, and also because the language was used between seafaring traders.
Because Indonesia was Dutch (the Dutch East Indies), many words have been borrowed from Dutch (especially scientific, academic terms and so on). Whereas English loan words figure more in Malay, as Malaya was British. 1 person has voted this message useful |
