I've reviewed chapter 4 and started chapter 5. It's a shame that I cannot listen until I get home though, since Icelandic pronunciation doesn't really follow the ortograph a whole lot (yet). I could, of course, listen to the audio first at home, but I seldom get around to doing this. Soon I will perhaps start listening to it when I ride my bike to work, but I'm still a bit too afraid of the brutal car drivers of Oslo to do that.

I have also been trying to get some more vocab by finding all the adjectives in the TYI word list (not a staggering amount of words though). How do people know how many words they know? I see people talking about how they have 1500 words or whatnot, but I really have NO idea. It ought to be easy to keep track of with Icelandic though, since I am working with somewhat thematized (is that a word?) word lists, but I still don't know. I guess I already have a couple of hundred of cognates that I don't even know about yet.

Some good news are that I got my Íslandsklukkan that I have in Norwegian as well. I thought it was an all Icelandic version, but no, it was a Swedish-Icelandic dual book (and there are two more in the trilogy)! I also got a BUNCH of Icelandi audiobooks (translations of a lot of Swedish and Norwegian children's books and modern classics), I don't even know how many hours (3-4GB or more). It will be for later though.

Finished chapter 5, halfway through chapter 6 of TYI. This weekend, I'm doing some Linguaphone and I'm going to LISTEN. Hopefully also some more Egils Saga.

I have a really hard time motivating myself for Linguaphone, so nothing happened there. I have been reading some, perhaps 5 pages, of Íslandsklukkan, and I've done the first exercise of my Icelandic grammar book, which included the present tense of "to be", weak group 1 masculine and feminine nouns and adverbs. Made a small poster out of the adverbs referring to placement.

Hello
Well, I´m Icelandic and speak very good icelandic ;) If you have some questions about the language I´d be happy to help.

P.S. when reading Íslandsklukka, be aware that Halldór Laxness made his own kind of spelling ( he was rebelling I guess) so don´t start writing the way he did!!!

Hello!
How absolutely perfect, I know no Icelandic people so far! Can I add you to MSN, provided you use it?

I read about that in the foreword to the book, and it's a bit of a bummer... how different is his spelling really?

I do have one question actually. In my grammar book, they seem to always say "they, [name] and [name] are doing something". They use a personal pronoun before they use the names of the persons. Is that how you do it today too? The book is from the 40's.

Unproductive week...

Well, finally finished ch 6 of TYI and started ch 7. Some vocab cramming from the grammar book exercises, done some declension charts to put on my wall (strong neuter nouns, weak masculine nouns), finally some more Linguaphone, of which I finished chapter two and started chapter three.

Halló :)

Hope your doing well in your studies.

Well, Halldór used to write like you would speak so it´s probably just easier to read. There are some spelling rules that he thought were just stupid so he deliberatly broke them. But like I said, probably easier to read .... but harder if you want to look the word up :(

And the 2nd question, no we really don´t use a personal pronoun before the names of people ... sometimes we do it if we are putting emphasis on the name but it´s not very common.

Gangi þér vel :) (good luck)

Hats off to you Tricoteuse! I also have TYIcelandic tucked away in a drawer somewhere, and as far as I recall it looks like a straight reprint of a 1960s book. It starts right away with all declensions without even bothering why and how. It's a terrible book and you probably are as motivated as a young guy getting to second base on a date :-D.

Förövrigt så bor jag i Norge också!
