Slow couple of days.
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 Assimil Japanese - Lesson 12 (rev 5 and 11) Japanese Sentence Patterns - 19 and 20 - Finished first chapter. Was mostly about adjectives. Assimil French - Lesson 6 (rev 5) Thursday, January 7, 2010 Assimil Japanese - Lesson 13 (rev 6 and 12) Japanesepod101 - Newbie Season 3, Episodes 21-22. 3 more to go and I will finish them up tomorrow. Then, like before, I'll take several days to review, print out the PDFs, etc. After I review, I'll be moving on to the Beginner Season 1 and starting from where I left off (lesson 20). Assimil French - Lesson 8 (rev 1 and 6) No German on either day. Took it easy for a few days. Been very tired and haven't slept well at all so I basically did half days. Assimil Japanese - Lesson 15 (rev 1, 8 and 13) Assimil French - Lesson 9 (rev 2 and 8) Not much done on Friday. Sorta took the day off, plus had a lot of things that I needed to do. Saturday, January 9, 2010 Japanesepod101 - Newbie Season 3 - Episodes 23-25. Finished with Newbie Season 3. Going to print out the PDFs review the season over the next few days. Then I'll start up with the Beginner Season 1 episodes. Assimil Japanese - Lesson 16 (rev 2, 9 and 15) Assimil French - Lesson 10 (rev 3 and 9) Not entirely back on track. Still didn't do German and I'm slacking off on my Japanese a bit. NFL playoff games were my excuse today (and will probably be my excuse tomorrow. :) ). 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Assimil Japanese - Lesson 17 (rev 3, 10 and 16) Assimil French - Lesson 11 (rev 4 and 10) Ended up having a lot to do today, so not much time for study (not to mention, NFL playoffs). Going back to a youtube video I mentioned awhile ago from Mose McCormick (fake edit: actually, it's 2 different ones) on how he dissects dialogues, instead of quickly reviewing the Newbie seasons from Japanesepod101, I'm going to do something along the lines of what he does. In each Newbie lesson, they focus on a grammar point (or 2 or 3). For instance, in Season 2, Episodes 1, they focused on 私は＿＿です。 In Season 2, Episode 2, they focus on the question particle か. So for now on, I'll be spending a good deal of time each day "mastering" each lesson using the resources I have available to me using the dialogues from the Newbie Season 2 and 3 PDFs. Meanwhile, I'll continue on with the Beginner series like I planned. So the daily study plan for Japanese goes: Assimil Japanese (takes 30-45 minutes) Japanesepod101 Beginner Season 1 (each episode is 10-15 minutes. 3 a day = 30-45 minutes) Study a construction/word usage/particle/etc. (or more than 1, depending on how hard it is). Will probably be 60-90 minutes. Bad week. Total lack of concentration and focus, combined with lack of sleep and zombie-mind.
Anyway, I managed to get the Assimil done every day, but not much else. I did spend one night going through the first 5 Newbie Season 2 lessons (again). All stuff I already had down pretty well, but it doesn't hurt to review/reinforce. Also got a few Beginner Season 1 Jpod101 lessons in. Here is where I am now: Japanese Assimil: Completed Lesson 22 Jpod101: Beginner Season 1, Episode 23 Grammar*: Jpod101 Newbie Season 2, Episode 5** French Assimil: Completed Lesson 16 * - For lack of a better word, I'll just call it this in my run down. What I mean is described in the previous post. ** Where I get what it is I cover/study/review will change. I haven't done much this past week. I had off from work, and took the time to do a lot of things that needed to be done, and also to spend a lot of time sleeping. Did get a bit of language study in. Meant to a do a lot more, but things came up that needed my attention so I didn't get much done unfortunately.
Here is where I am: Japanese Assimil: Completed Lesson 24 Jpod101: Beginner Season 1, Episode 23 Grammar: Jpod101 Newbie Season 2, Episode 5 (same place, but did more from the first 5 lessons) French Assimil: Completed Lesson 20 German TY Improve: Same as before, done 2/3rds of Chapter 1. Haven't done this in weeks. So, as I mentioned way back at the beginning, I am a fan of SRSing sentences, however, I've grown tired and bored with Anki SRS. So instead of doing that, while I am doing my grammar, I will write out a few sentences in a notebook per grammar point that I am studying plus a vocab word or two to get things started. I will probably grab some sentences from Assimil as well. No English, no romanji. Just Japanese. And I will regularly read through the sentences. Anytime I get stuck on one, I'll make a note of it, restudy what it is I am stuck. If it's a grammar point, I can review it and add a few more examples of that grammar point to the notebook. If it's vocab, I'll add more sentences with that vocab. I eventually will turn these lone sentences into short dialogues or descriptions, and then longer dialogues and descriptions, and eventually into writing out short stories as a way to practice/learn vocab and grammar. Here are the first several sentences I have added to this Japanese-only notebook. 私は学生です。 私はアメリカ人です。 これは何ですか。 私も学生だ。 あなとは学生ですか。 私も先生です。 これは本だ。 これは先生の本です。 ＿＿＿は何ですか。 I am going to add fragments in the beginning as well like the last one that means "What is the (topic)?" I am going to start doing this soon with French and German as well. I could probably jump to the short dialogues and descriptions stage with German (when I ever actually get back to German). For French, just the short, simple stuff. Pretty much sentences directly from Assimil at first. (I should think about changing the thread title since I've largely dropped this "Assimil experiment" idea since I plan to jump into Teach Yourself French when I'm done Assimil, as well as doing other activities like this French-only notebook.) 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Hope you don't mind me giving you some advice even though you didn't ask for it, but bear in mind that あなた can sound very direct and even offensive in many situations. To be on the safe side, you should omit it and just ask 学生ですか, or use the person's name plus さん even when you are speaking directly to the person.

Yeah, I know あなた is direct and I should steer clear of using it. I still have to know it though. :)
