This is my TAC 2010 post!
Goal:
Japanese-Starting out basically from scratch (I know the hiragana and about 30 kanji) my goal is to reach intermediate fluency. This will be my main focus as a language with the others as a side interest.
German-With 2 years of High School class's in my past I know some German but I would hesitate to say it's even a basic level with the amount I have forgotten. Goal for this year is to be able to read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets German translation.
Italian-I know about 3 words in Italian and there all curse words however I've always wanted to learn Italian and read some of the works by Renaissance authors and Dante's Inferno. I hope to have basic fluency (I won't make it but I can hope!).
Christmas day I'll start the kick off in earnest but until then I'll be amassing materials and learning the basics.

Hey Genini1,
Looks like we are starting the same languages from scratch which is pretty cool. I look forward to reading your log to see how you progress. Good luck on your TAC 2010!

Alright well its been a week and I figure I'll update weekly. I got a bunch of stuff I ordered in the mail throughout the week that I've started using. I got a bunch of Hunter x Hunter manga in the mail (my favorite series) so I've started reading them, it's slow going but I made it a third of the way through a volume so far. I've also been doing the Heisig method for remember the Kanji with 50 per day and I'm up to 500 now. Finished Japanese the Manga Way as well but I need to reread it to make sure I can remember it all. I just got my teach yourself German book today and will start by putting the vocab into anki. Unfortunately my Italian materials have not yet arrived so I'm still waiting on them. I have also decided I want to add another language to my TaC but I haven't decided between Russian, Arabic, or Greek, I'll know by next week at least.
Here's to progress cheers.

Alright one more week down, I continued focusing on Japanese, specifically on learning the kanji the Heisig way as I've found not knowing the Kanji to be the hardest part of trying to read in Japanese. I've been able to translate about half of a manga so it's working pretty good so far. I finally got TY Italian and plan to do a unit of that whenever I really feel like it as it's my tertiary language though I've done 5 so far. In German my copy of Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen as well as my copy of Harry Potter und die Kammer des Schreckens came in and I'm gonna try my best to read them.
Goals for next Week.
Learn 300 Kanji.
Translate the remainder of a manga I started.
Get to lesson 15 in Japanese for Busy People.
Go through 3 units of TY Italian.
Go through 10 units of TY German.
Read 2 chapters of the Harry Potter books.
Here's to a week of progress, Cheers.

Alright well one week later and looking at my goals I bit off quite a bit more then I could chew. I'm scaling back the number of kanji I'm learning per day because when I was at 50 a day I just didn't feel I could actually review the one's already learned and add 50 new one's. So I'm cutting back to 20 per day with doing more if I can. I managed to complete my goal for lesson 15 of Japanese for busy people, 3 units of TY Italian as well as 12 lessons of TY German. Only one chapter of Harry Potter though since I put that one on the back burner. I managed to find out that the library near me actually has pimsleur for my languages so I might start doing those while I'm at the gym. It also has all the Harry Potter books in German I just had to look in the children's section.
Goals for next Week.
150 Kanji.
Lesson 20 of Japanese for Busy People.
5 Units of TY Italian.
7 Units of TY German.
Finish one manga.
Here's to a week of progress, Cheers.

Well two weeks and I didn't accomplish as much as I wanted to. This was mainly due to not feeling up to learning a lot so instead I spent most of the time with review which is much less mentally tiring to me. As much as I want to learn fast, sometimes it helps to just stop and smell the rose's so speak and revel in what you do know rather then what you don't.
Goal for week ending on Monday, January 18
Japanese:
100 Kanji from RTK
100 Kanji taken from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Lesson 22 of Japanese for Busy People.
German:
Get up to lesson 12 of Teach Yourself German.
100 Vocabulary words taken from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. (Yes I really like the book)
Italian:
I would be happy if I got to lesson 4 of Teach Yourself Italian as a result of my focus on Japanese/German Italian will have to take a backseat.
Here is to a week of progress, Cheers.

I got some more Japanese materials over the last week that I'm pretty excited about. I got 3 of the Kodansha power series books as well as a book on general vocabulary words. The best things I got were two video games I imported from Japan. One is Pokemon Soul Silver and is interesting because it is entirely in kana with no kanji which is really helping to improve my reading speed. The other game is Final Fantasy 13 one of my favorite video game series of all time. The game is really fun and throughout the game the characters randomly talk and have there words subtitled on the screen which makes it easier to understand. Most importantly though they bring back my motivation to study and learn Japanese. Learning and fun can now be together with as Khazamoto says is the only way to learn.

Well I'm pretty excited because I just hit one of my language goals. I now know 1,000 kanji as a result of the Heisig method. I know I still have 1,000 to go but now that I'm halfway through it is all downhill I should be able to look at a book and recognize a good number of the characters and the one's I don't I can sometimes pick out from context. I also found out that I can change my playstation 3 region to Japan and now I can download all sorts of Japanese game trailers and game demo's for free. Since it's all about stuff I know I want to use I learn it much faster then I do from my TY book. 1500 kanji is my next major goal and I would like to have it done within the month meanwhile I'm going to start learning more about syntax and how to use the language so I can use what I do have.
Here's to a week of progress, Cheers.
