I have, of late, begun a systematic effort to refine my previously terribly unsystematic study habits. The idea of the TAC seems perfectly in keeping with that, and thus my decision to participate. I will be studying three languages: Mandarin, Russian, and another language that I have not quite pinned down yet.
RUSSIAN:
A language I am passionately in love with. Motivation here is not an issue, but systematic study is. I have given myself a somewhat generous rating of basic fluency in my language profile, and my goal for the 2010 TAC is to fulfill that and begin to propel myself towards advanced fluency. My main obstacle here is listening comprehension and writing. To improve listening comprehension, I plan to watch at least one movie a week in Russian with a close ear to learn. As for writing, I will be using lang-8, MINIMALLY 2-3 pieces a week. I would also like to find a local conversation partner to increase my comfort using the language colloquially. And of course, I will continue doing wordlists, by Iversen's method, at the rate of 15 words a day.
MANDARIN:
Although it is not the object of a near-obsessive linguistic quest like Russian, I am growing to love Mandarin more and more as I continue my studies in it. My eventual goal here is all around competence, and for 2010 I want to bring my Mandarin up to the high intermediate level. I think that that 2000 characters is a reasonable minimum goal, which mean that I'll strive to learn 10 each day, with wiggle room for grammar study and any other things that may come my way. However, I'd love to breach the 3000 mark.
A THIRD LANGUAGE:
Due to the grammatical simplicity of Mandarin and my love for learning morphology (I like puzzles), I would like to take up a third language for the 2010 TAC. Currently, the two strongest candidates are Turkish and Georgian, although at the moment Turkish has the upper hand. My TAC goal is to have the third language picked, and materials prepared by the end of January, and, by the end of the TAC, to have brought my chosen language to a high beginner level. Obviously, I'll have more details to work out once I have a concrete choice.
In addition to the TAC, I will, of course, be flirting with other languages to satisfy my incessant wanderlust. These will doubtlessly include bouts of Dutch and Spanish study, as well as my slow trudge through Latin.
