My name is Anne and I am turning sixteen this year, this is my Russian learning log. I've never really had any interest in learning languages due to the mandatory and strenuous classes of French, however this changed at age thirteen when I came across a Plains Cree translated version of the Christian bible in my parents' storage room. I was fascinated with how the text looked and wondered what it would be like to be multilingual, however this thought left my mind until mid 2009 when I discovered this website.
To begin I will be learning the Cyrillic alphabet, and from here I will progress onto the Princeton Russian Course. I will practice 30 minutes to 2 hours each day (perhaps more), coupled with an unlimited time of passive listening. Every so often there will be photos from a separate progress journal I'm keeping. Russian is a wonderful language, very soft and melodic, and the best thing about it is that when you get good enough you have access to some of the greatest literature the world has ever known in the original, plus the chance to travel to one of the most fascinating countries on Earth and get to know the locals. My Russian listening has met some distractions, most prominently Mylène Farmer and Otis Redding. To veer from these distractions I’ve been searching the internet for Russian music, although I haven’t been successful in finding something which suites my tastes thus far. I think I’ll look into folk music, it usually strikes a pleasant chord with me.
I’m not sure whether placing too much importance on pronunciation this early is positive. My perfectionist tendencies are surfacing, and despite logic telling me it’s alright to make mistakes I can’t seem to rid this obsession with perfection and minute details. Learning the Cyrillic alphabet is fun, I'm getting that warm feeling in the back of my head which arrives when I know I'm learning something.
