I finished the second part of Heisig's book, just over 500 Kanji, from now on the stories will have to be mine - which I actually look forward to, as I usually come up with silly stuff with frightening ease. Calvin's Dad is a hero of mine :D
Given that I'd gone through this part of the book a bit more than a year ago, I suppose it's not surprising that it didn't feel all too tedious to get there (again) in about a month. I'd be happy to reach the 1000 Kanji mark by end of April, which will probably be harder, given the increasing workload of keeping those I've learned fresh in memory.
I definitely want to work through the whole book this year, preferably before the end of summer. There, I've said it :)
My biggest hope is to find this helps me memorising new vocabulary based on the ethymology/readings of the new words I come across, I am under the impression it already happens sometimes now (I work with the Assimil, mainly), but by far not as much as I'd like.
One question I have is that the book covers some 2000 characters, but there is a Kanji deck for Anki with 3007 "Heisig number"-ed Kanjis - where is the extra 1000 covered by Heisig ?

There are actually 3 Heisig books on kanji. The first covers 2042 kanji and is the one you have. The second covers the readings of the kanji in the first book. The last book has 1,000 kanji and covers both the reading and the actual kanji. If you want some help thinking of stories http://kanji.koohii.com/ has a large community that comes up with stories for each kanji and is quite helpful.

Thanks for the information ! I'll have a look at the site you mention if I can't come up with anything silly enough to stick, but usually that's not a problem :)
