MY GOAL: To be able to speak and read/write basic Arabic within a year of study
Am I being too ambitious? Perhaps. But, I rather try my best and give my full effort to learn the language in a year than to study it on and off and give it four. I think this journal will help keep me focused on fulfilling that target.
I am truly motivated to learn, and I am doing this for very practical reasons, so I definitely am not "flirting" with the language here, in spite of the "taste" part of the title. :P
Many have mentioned that studying MSA first and then transitioning to a dialect is the preferred route, but I really would like to continue studying MT's Egyptian course. I have gotten a better grasp of the language as a whole just from the first disc.
Plan of attack for now:
1. Michel Thomas Arabic (foundation, advanced, and vocabulary)
2. Pimsleur Egyptian (I am able study this for free from my library, so it'd be a wasted opportunity if I didn't give it some time)
3. Mastering Arabic course
4. Nicholas Awde's Arabic Alphabet book
5. Assimil Arabic (horrible pronunciation, but excellent guide to grammar)
6. Linguaphone Arabic
7. Alif Baa and Al Kitaab

Good luck!
I don't think starting out with Egyptian Arabic is half bad, because it has a whole lot
less grammar; you can start having conversations much faster.

good luck and if you have any question then ask.
Reading and writing Arabic in one year is an achievment itself so speaking it would be a hard thing to accomplish in such period.
Good luck once again.

25 Feb 2010 -
- Reviewed disc 1 of MT Arabic foundation
- Learned quite a few new words from Your First 100 Words in Arabic
- Learned most of the letters of the alphabet
Honestly, I did not do a lot today. But I'm looking forward to working seriously tomorrow. I also have a basketball game every Friday evening with many Arabic-speakers, so I am able to practice a bit with them. :D

Gah, sorry for the long delay. My school work is killing me, and other things are piling up. To save time for serious study, I'll be updating my log weekly instead of trying to do it daily.
However, I was able to do some work this week:
- Finished Awde's book. I think I have a pretty good grasp of the alphabet now. A few grammar concepts doesn't make sense to me, but I will progress on and see how I feel about them after a week or so.
- Reached Disc 3 of MT Arabic.
- Created flash cards for the alphabet, to help me remember them better (they look so similar to each other!)
