After quite a lot of work I've finally got beyond the beginner stage of Korean, it's been a hard journey and I've learned a lot about language learning on the way. One thing I tried but couldn't get to grips with first time around was shadowing. I'm quite determined to give this a shot now and see if I can get it to work because I think it could be very effective for me shadowing more advanced material ( blogs and the like )to really move forward. I have Assimil's Korean course which I havent really used previously so I'm going to work through that to practise shadowing and hopefully increase my productive skills which are still lagging behind my ability to understand.
If this goes well I'd also quite like to try and pick another language up afterwards ( French probably ) as I have found I quite enjoy language study as a hobby. Anyway, yesterday I started with lesson 1 which is very basic and nice and slow. I found I could shadow this reasonably well after 10 minutes or so of practise. Just got back from the park where I've spent 15 minutes shadowing lessons 1 and 2 now. So far it's going ok, I wonder how much of that is to do with the fact the lessons are slow and short ( and easy ) at the moment. I hope I can keep this going once the lessons hot up a bit. So far it seems I can basically shadow ok once I have effectively memorized what is coming next, I don't think I'd be able to 'blind shadow' at this point because I am able to memorize pretty quickly precisely because the audio is meaningful for me.

Just got back from the park again, today I added in the third lesson, I'm actually concentrating on the new lesson but reviewing the old ones too at this point. So far this experiment is going quite well. Spent about 25 mins out there today and could keep up with all 3 lessons, interestingly I find myself repeating phrases from the lessons in my mind during the day when I'm not shadowing, I take this to be a good sign. Still a bit concerned that I wont be able to keep up with harder/faster material but for now I'm enjoying the exercise, it's quite invigorating.
The park was quite crowded this morning but no one cared that I was walking along speaking Korean out loud, I guess people are used to seeing people on their hands free phones. 1 person has voted this message useful |
