After three and a half semesters of formal instruction in Spanish, I'm striking out on my own. I'm using native-language material to increase my familiarity with the language.
Materials:
BBC Mundo podcast (news)
Spanish-language pop music (Don't laugh. That stuff is catchy.)
And the most intimidating of all... Cien años de soledad by Gabriel García Márquez.
As I encounter unfamiliar words, I'm making flashcards of them to review material. Same goes with learning unfamiliar grammar as I go. I'm still using a grammar text to learn new structures on my own, as well.
