Here is my attempt at documenting my studies for 09.

I have been learning french for 2 years. I've used many many resources. I have my thoughts on each and will share these as I go along.

Goal 09

To be able to reach a standard whereby I can listen to radio/movies/music/audiobooks and almost have full comprehension. I am going to achieve this predominately by using the Listening-Reading method

I have given myself short one month goals. By combining a number of resources within a month it gives me a variety of options to choose from. I never worked well by using text books or writing or tests, in fact I havent learned very much from them when I've used them. So below are my resources for this month.

Yesterday I watched an episode of south park. I also had a small chunk of L-R to do from Emile Zola's La Bete Humaine to just about complete the novel before I move onto 20000 Leagues Under the Sea.

I saw elsewhere on another french log that some people may be making several sweeps of the same book. I did this initially and found it to be absolute torture. I think it's completely necessary to read the book in your native language and then L-R it in your target language. But to read it a third time? I would prefer to move onto another book.

Anways about La Bete Humaine I recommend it strongly. Out of all the french novels I've read so far I've found this to be the most interesting. I loved Therese Raquin which is probably Zola's most famous book but this tops it for me. I don't want to give a plot summary here, but I will point out one of the ideas here (there are many) that I think Zola touched upon which interested me. He seems to undermine the concept of a crime novel and the way in which detectives logically follow clues to put together a case. I know we see a lot of this in TV and movies these days. Well I think Zola makes the point that we sometimes are not logical at all and often lawyers/detectives will ignore the truth if it doesn't fit in with their case. This book is not in anyway a dectective novel, thank God.

I was going to include the audiobook here. I think it was on www.librivox.org. It looks like it's been wiped though. O well.

I completed about an hour and a half of study yesterday.

I finished L-Ring La Bete Humaine. I watched 1 episode of South Park and I did 5 lessons of Learn in Your Car. I hope to have a bigger day today.

I think shows like Simpsons and South Park are great if you can get your hands on them. They're a good study tool as often you are already familiar with the episode. The language is very down to earth and simple. Except for Marge the voices are all done really well.

Bah, I hate the Simpsons in French, we get Futurama too if that interests you. I can't even watch House when it is dubbed, and I loved House. I have however, been forced to watch the reruns of Friends, which isn't too bad. But my god, my girlfriend watches bold and the beautiful or something similar, and it is just as bad in french as it ever was in English.

I will be following your log, and pilfering any good ideas I come across, so good luck.

Thom.

I would be most interested in watching Futurama in French, I havent seen a whole lot of it in English so it would be almost new to me. I hope to spend some time in France this year because instead of 20 hours away i'm just about 2 now. While I'm there I'm going to stock up with french resources, mostly audiobooks and movies. Futurama is something I'd like to have.

For the last two days I've totaled about 3 1/2 hours of study. I L/R about 8 Chapters. 1 episode south park and simpsons and 1 french film.

The film I watched was Bob Le Flambeur, I believe this translates as Bob the high roller. I couldn't say I knew a lot about the film before I went ahead and watched it. I don't know the director and any of the actors except I recognised one of the actors who played the teacher in Les Quatre Cent Coups. This is a heist movie but on a much smaller scale then we see these days. It was much more enjoyable to see this film without all the bells and whistles then something like like Ocean's 11(which i've never seen). I think the lead was very good, he played a sweet and tender hooligan typish role quite well. I would recommned this to you all but not imploringly.

Merry Christmas

Hey all,

Trying to keep very busy during Christmas. I'm half way through L-Ring 20000 leagues under the sea and I've watched 4 episodes of Simpsons.

I thought I might list all the various french learning methods I've used over the past two years. I've used a lot! This is good as a reference for myself.

Michel Thomas - Foundation / Advanced / Vocabulary Builder / and the other one.
French in action
Listen Reading (Therese Raquin,La Bete Humaine,Une Vie, Around the world in 80 days, Journey to the centre of the earth, Le petit prince, Madame Bovary, Metamorphosis, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Rouge et Noir, The death of Ivan Ilitch)
Learn in you car french
Oxford french
Pimsleur
Podcasts
Mneysomne
Hugo advanced
Some shadowing
News online
Lots of french films - Mostly Godard, Truffaut and Bresson.
Three night time courses. 10 weeks each, 2 1/2 hour lessons

That's all I can recollect at the moment. I'm SURE there is lots of little things I've missed. I was doing a website that I found on this forum where you could hear and read written texts. Forget the name. One glaring omission is Assimil french. I would like to give it a go if I can get my hands on it. I'm wondering if it is appropriate for my level. I'm probably a lowish intermediate. What do you all think?

I'm sure you know this, but the FSI French and Phonology courses are both available for free on the fsi-language-courses.com site. I am starting French from scratch and have only started the Phonology course, but the Basic Course is supposedly very good for internalizing grammar. If you can stand working through the drills, it may be worth checking out.

Btw, what you said about The Simpsons and South Park I think is true, in particular with animated shows. Not only are you already familiar with what is going on, but the movement of the characters' mouths isn't as distracting as when watching overdubbed non-animated TV shows. I think it's also a good step towards being able to follow native films/shows :)

I tried very briefly the FSI course. Actually I didn't give it a very good go. I might get back to it eventually. I'm not too sure if I would like the constant drilling and repetitivness of the course. For the time being though i'm enjoying the more laid back style of learning without drills or text books. I know that in the beginning you have to go through the drills and the exercises and im kind of glad I don't have to do that - at least for a while.

I've been very pleased with my progess since my last post. I've completed L-Ring 20000 Leagues Under the Sea. So it took about 8 days and the audiobook was 15 hours. Overall when I'm L-Ring I have no trouble folllowing the place in the book. Also with just the sheer exposure to the language without gaps it beats watching a film or listening to music anyday. I have had a bit of a high whilst reading this time because I find myself looking to the next sentence and trying to formulate the first few words. Of course 90% of the time I'm completely wrong BUT if i'm wrong I can fully comprehend how it could be said in a different way and I have an ahhhh... moment.

Well I set myself a goal for this month and completing the book was the biggest hurdle. My next challenge is deciding which book to do next. I could do Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Bel Ami or short story collect by Guy de Maupassant, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Swan's Way by Marcel Proust and I saw Persuasion was added as a audiobook and i've read it previously so it would save a lot of time. What a daunting prospect all that is to one day have read all these books eventually and you have to read them twice!!!

Finally I've watched another film. The film I watched was Le Rayon Vert (the green ray)by Eric Rohmer in 1986. I absolutely adored this film. It's a little bit melancholy..actually very much so, but thats fine. Has anyone here seen it? From just doing a bit of browsing on the net and imdb it seems that it's not a widely known film. But please if you get the chance to watch it I think you will enjoy it. In a strange coincidence the title of the book is a Jules Verne novel(he wrote the book I was reading at the time). At one point in the movie there are 5 old people discussing the works of Jules Verne. They are all agreed that they are not very fond of old Jules except one of them is fond of his book The Green Ray. Well it becomes a bit of a central theme to the movie. I won't divulge any of the plot here because I watched the film myself knowing absolutely nothing about it and I think I enjoyed it more as a result.

bye bye
