I really like it. Jules Verne writes loads of well-written, well-thought out adventure stories. They are in my opinon really good page turners. I felt this book was a real lesson in the science of the sea. I'm looking foward to going to an aquarium some time soon to correlate his story, HA! I do think most people will enjoy this book. My studies have been going well. I've just finished Learn in Your Car French. Which means I've nearly finished my target for the month. I have only half a season of Simpsons and 1 more French film. I should start making plans for next month a little early. I think there will be considerably more Listen - Reading coming up. I've watched one more film call Cache(hidden) from 2005. It was a bit of a suspense thriller which was refreshing for a change. I understood that the film won a few awards. The basic story is a middle aged couple is receiving tapes of their house being recorded as well as crayon drawn pictures of a boy with blood coming from his mouth. The story unfurls from there. Yeah. I had to read this for a university seminar on Jules Verne. My favourite book by him is "Michel Strogoff" however, one of of his lesser known ones, also among the literature for that seminar. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

An update from me for TAC09.
I've changed my goal for 09 to something I think which is more attainable. Being fluent in French by the end of this year would be nice, but I should be a bit more realistic. I've decided to make my goal for this year to be fluent in listening comprehension. I wish to be able to watch movies, listen to the radio and listen-read to a high standard by the end of this year. I think this is still a very hard goal but more realistic. Because of this I'm going to completely ignore writing for the forseeable future and also put speaking to the side. The goals I set out for myself the last month were pretty modest so I'm going to make it a little tougher. I hope to L-R Persuasion, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Jane Eyre. Throw in some simpsons and a few movies and thats my plan for this month. I began L-Ring Persuasion last night and was a little shocked by the French translation. It simply chopped out bits and skipped on a rapid pace. This has been so far the worst translastion that I've had to deal with, however it's been good in a way because it's more challenging then usual to keep up. Has anyone tried this audiobook? How do you currently fare watching French films? I think you are underestimating yourself when you say French fluency is out of the picture by the end of the year! Although I do agree, especially with the quality (and quantity!) of French films and literature, listening fluency would be great :)

Well I've tried it several times, it can be pretty frustrating when you are missing a lot of key plot points. I have tried to watch films first without subtitles and then afterwards with subtitles. I realise how little of the film I've understood, I can only pick up a rambling of words but not make them totally coherent. I think having a sound knowledge of vocabulary would help a lot. I have been successful once I thnk when I was watching Les Miserables (with Gerad depardieu and John Malkovich). I was already familiar with the story and the voices were very audible and were not too fast. This was a four part mini-series and I thought all in all it was pretty dreadful :P.
I think this is so true. French learners are really spoilt for quality Cinema, Literature and language resources. This is one of the major reasons why I am learning the language. In contrast I would not like to learn Italian or Spanish because simply I don't find their films and music are to my taste. Though this may one day change Well I have had a good couple of days since my previous post. I have L-Red both Persuasion and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. One audiobook was really good and one wasn't. The French audiobook of Persuasion was simply a hack job of the real novel, I guess this comes down to the person who translated it into French. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was really brilliant. It was very literal and faithful to the original and was complete with interesting sound effects. As most of you are already familiar with the story I think you can go straight into L-RIng without reading in English first. Well last couple of days have been a bit bleak in terms of study and RL.
I have managed to squeeze in a little bit of study. I watched a couple of films. The first was La Vie En Rose(I think it's also know as La Mome). I'm sure many of you have seen this one. In terms of approach for language study I first watched the film in French with no subs. Crush had asked me how I do when I watched films without subtitles and the answer for this film was prettttyyy bad! I pick up a few words here or there but that's about it. I feel quite frustrated at this point after two years of consistent study and not being able to understand as much as I wish to. I went ahead and watched the film with subs a day or two later and it really hit me how much I was really missing. Things became much clearer in terms of plot and I could link the missing pieces. When I do have the English on the screen I can distinguish the French much better. Well my goal is to have listening fluency by the end of this year, so we'll see in 11 months if I can watch this film again. Overall I thought the film was pretty good. You can't help but be a little sceptical whether or not this was faithful to Edith Piaf's real life and how much of it was conjured up. I found the songs really enchantic as I've never really heard that much of her music. It does fall into the genre of bio pic and it does follow a lot of the familiar territory of a film of this genre. It is still worth seeing. The other film I watched was Last Year at Marienbad(L'annee derniere a Marienbad). This film was made in 1961 by Alain Resnais. I've seen another one of his films called Hiroshima Mon Amour which I love. I think I'm quite a patient person when watching films and I hesitate to use words or phrases like 'too slow' or 'challenging' though some people may describe this film in that way. Somebody wrote elsewhere that enjoying this film really depends upon how successfully you enter into the dreaminess and trance like state and I completely agree with this. Unfortunately when I watched it I was quite agitated and my mind was elsewhere and I didn't enjoy it as much as I should have. I will watch this film again when my body is throughly exhausted and the day is done so I can really turn off my mind and just enjoy. Well that's about it. Last couple of days were a bit slow but I'm bang on target for making for goal for the month. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Since I'm on a similar path with French, I'd like to know how you like l-r without dual texts. Have you tried dual texts at all? Also, I'm doing about 4 passes of each book. Maybe I shouldn't be repeating.
