Well, a lot of movies are fairly hard to understand (especially original ones - translations are usually easier, if the translation is ok) - between slang, background noise, people whispering and shouting as loud stuff happens, dialects, etc, they're a large step beyond language learning courses. Subtitles usually aren't very close to the original film, unfortunately, regardless of which language they're in. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Yes, I've found that subtitles are quite often off even when in the same language as the movie. Also, when they are not in the target language it breaks the immersion for me. However, I find that after having read the subs I can then go back over the dialog without them and hear the words better as I know what to expect. Feb 16 (Sun) Took a break. Checked out resources on Portuguese. With the large Brazilian population here (of which many are very sexy females) and its similarity to Spanish I would be a fool not to study it. My main concern is balancing the time with Italian, which I love dearly. Feb 16 (Mon) Listened to some Pimsleur and Assimil driving to/from work and at lunch. Feb 17 (Tue) Assimil: I listened to lessons 4 - 20 while walking. I'm impressed with how many words I've learned. Granted, many are close to Spanish but as I've heard them elsewhere I am familiar with them. I went over the text of lessons 4 and 5 and figured out some words I didn't recognize or didn't quite remember the meaning of. I'm planning to start extracting vocabulary from Assimil into an Anki deck, ideally with some audio. Anki decks are stored in a binary format. I hope they can be extracted to a text format like XML. Assimil: Listened yet again to the audio from lessons 1 - 24 (the first CD) at lunch, work and walking. I started an Anki deck. It was rather tedious typing all that in. I think I like the idea of using LingQ better. The free version is limited to 300 cards but I can try for now. For lessons 4 to 7 I just highlighted words and their translated counterparts. I think that will be enough. I just scanned over what I did and I recognized all the words without looking at translations. The break from studying did me well as I was excited to hear Italian again and eager to learn more words. I think I will continue focusing on Italian for the rest of the week then take a day to get my Portuguese going. Then in future maybe 1 or 2 days for Portuguese and the rest Italian. Assimil I started listened to the audio from the next CD on the ride to work. I re-listened to the last 14 lessons (10 - 24) during my walk around the neighborhood tonight. Reviewed the text of the first 7 lessons and went over all the notes. Went through the text of lessons 8 and 9 as well including the notes. I know the audio so well now that I can hear it in my head as I read the text. I used a highlighter on new words and on those I want to learn better. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Note: I started listening to Pimsleur Portuguese this weekend. I am hoping I can study
both with out too much conflict. It's really interesting to see how the children of Latin compare. Feb 23(Mon) Assimil Listened to the audio for lessons 10 - 24 driving and at lunch yet again. I also listened to the audio for CD2 while working. The audio for the first half of CD 1 is so burnt into my brain I can hear it in my head when I read the text. Did the text for lessons 10 and 11, highlighting new words and reading the grammar notes. Note: I need to make more time to do the bookwork. I can't do it while doing other things (shopping, cleaning, working out) but I'd rather be focused anyway. Pimsleur 2A Lesson 1 in car driving to work. Lesson 2 while walking. I skipped over some repetitive parts. A lot of stuff I know but I figure the repetition will cement things. Pimsleur 2A Finished up to lesson 6 while driving, working, walking. My mind wanders a lot during the repetitive stuff but I'm afraid to miss anything. Did learn a few new things. I need to look them up to really cement them in my mind. I feel like I need text to go with the audio. I like to see the words in my mind. Assimil Did lessons 14, 15 and 16. Highlighted and looked up words I wasn't familiar with. WordReference.com is awesome! It even has a link to find the word in context using Google Groups. Notes: I'm dead tired. I was a bit ill today from something I ate. I did manage to study though, but I am not feeling focused. Assimil: Lesson 17, 18 Pimsleur 2A: Lesson 7 LingQ: Eating Out (lessons 1 - 3), "Who is She?" (lessons 1 - 4) The lessons are very short but I learned some new words. I'm feeling somewhat discouraged as I wondering how much time I can realistically devote to this in future. I am in dire need of regular exercise and I fear that this will take a lot of time from my studies and maybe it should. Also my efforts seem wasted in that there isn't a large Italian speaking community around here that I am aware of. I can't help but think that Portuguese would be more useful with the large Brazilian community we have here. And its not like I'm finding tons of accessible native language material. I do wish to travel to Italy and like the language and culture very much. Perhaps joining "Club Tutti" (local Italian interest club) and exploring online language exchange communities would help.
