I have decided to follow suit and start my TAC early. And with the amount of languages to concentrate on I think I need the headstart.
I am the ambitious sort as you may know (or maybe I am the stupid sort?) however being the language student that I am I tend to have a lot of spare time. So I am going to do a little experiment so-to-speak. The main points are:
How many languages can I actually achieve a decent level in within a year?
What is the best method to go about adding them in?
Here is what I am currently thinking:
Obviously first we will have my carry-over languages from TAC09. Firstly it was a mess. Secondly I need new goals to keep improving.
Japanese: This is one of the languages that will be added in at the start. I have the best base in it and am in between the so-called Upper Intermediate and Advanced stages.
Goals: To reach an steady advanced level.
German: I study this language at University, however the course is so slow for my pace and I don't feel the course even gives you a solid beginner basis. I already have a background of German from 4 years at high school, so my goal shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Goals: To reach a upper-intermediate level.
Spanish: The other Uni-language. I don't have a passion for Spanish yet like I do for my other languages, but hopefully this will come in the future. The same about the course materials applies for Spanish but I have composed my own I think will work well.
Goals: To reach intermediate level.
For the next set of 7 languages (yes, it is correct) I will be adding them on a monthly basis. This means an intensive study month which if I put enough time into will be extremely beneficial for each one.
Russian: This was one of the mess-up languages of TAC09. I hardly spent any time on it! This won't happen this year though because I have put it first. The intensive month will consist of audio, reading and writing so hopefully I will get the full balance I need.
Goals: To reach higher beginner- intermediate level.
Korean: The other total mess-up. I spent more time on Korean than Russian but in such a non-beneficial way... it really made no difference. I have put Korean in as my second intensive month session so hopefully I can pull back the missed months.
Goals: To reach higher beginner level.
NEW Swedish: I dabbled with Swedish last year. It is a good language where hopefully my basis on German will help. I fell in love hearing Swedish while watching 'Let the Right one in', I believe to be the only Swedish movie I have ever watched. I would love to be able to read the book in Swedish one day...
Goals: To reach intermediate level.
NEW Mandarin: I love Mandarin, the culture, history, everything enthralls me. However the tones are such a daunting task for me. Purely because I never thought I would be able to achieve them. I need to change my mindset.
Goals: To reach higher-beginner level.
NEW Finnish: I have known for months I would be adding this to my TAC2010 if I found some resources. Sadly my favourite bookshop for foreign language materials announced it was shutting down on Sunday (Borders UK) so I dashed over there are picked up tons of books yesterday. All Finnish materials were 75% off, bargain in my eyes.
Goals: To reach higher-beginner level. (I don't want to underestimate the difficulty)
NEW Thai: I have had the resources for a good year or so. I think it is time to put them to use. I have quite a few Thai-language movies and learning materials but am weary at if they are enough or not.
Goals: Achieved beginner level.
NEW Arabic: I have put this as my last intensive language for various reasons. The alphabet amazes me and the language sounds so exotic. However I need some feedback. Speaking wise, which is the best type of arabic to speak? Moreover does anyone have some videos of different dialects to show me the sound? PM me if you do. I bought the TY Arabic so far, and need some recommendations on other resources. Lots of advice needed really.
Goals: Achieved beginner level.
As you can see I am going to be very busy but hope to update my journal religiously. That way, we can all encourage each other and hopefully all achieve our goals!
Good luck to everyone starting and about to commence TAC2010. I wish everyone the best of luck.
Kupo

Mandarin: http://www.chineselearner.com/pinyin/pinyinchart.htm has all Chinese syllables with all possible tones. This is great for reference, or also to study the tones. http://www.pinyinpractice.com/tones.htm is a great online exercise for the tones - the same site also has exercises for recognizing the initials and finals.
I have no doubt that you will succeed with Mandarin. It doesn't take all that much time to get used the pronunciation, though you may still forget the right tone occasionally in conversation. But the Chinese people are used to tone-deaf foreigners (using those phrasebooks that don't use real spelling never mind tone indicators); if you make an actual effort to get the tone right, people will already be happy and try to help you.
Arabic: Egyptian Arabic is the dialect people understand best, because of Egypt's huge media industry. Egyptian Arabic also features easier grammar than MSA. Yet I'm learning MSA because I want to be able to read as well. I'm very unsatisfied with a lot of the learning materials out there (ask me specifically about one if you want a rant), TY is okay but my favourite to date is Langenscheidt Praktischer Sprachlehrgang Arabisch. One of the advantages is that each lesson is recorded not just in MSA but also Egyptian and Syrian, with some explanations of the differences.

Could you clarify your plan? I'm interested in your strategy for studying all of these. It sounds like you're adding a new one every month? So will each month have a "main" language, along with practice of all the previous ones? I'm considering doing 3 languages in 2010, but I haven't yet figured out how to schedule my time, so I'm looking for ideas.

Sure, it is such a long post I am sure I managed to get a little away with myself. You are correct. Each month I will be adding a language as the 'main' language while maintaining and continuing with the others. I plan to study the 'main language of the month' for as much time as I can.. probably around 4+ hours depending on the day, alotting 2 hours a day for the ones that I have already picked up. I may change it to suit circumstances at different times of the year, but this is the general idea at present.
Thank you for the support everyone. I will be starting my TAC as of tomorrow, due to the fact I am particularly unwell for no apparent reason today. So TAC starts 03/12/09!
