Those scripts look very helpful! I'll have to head down to the local library and pick up some Miyazaki films. :) I love his work- I have seen every Miyazaki film ever made, including ones that haven't been released in America (thanks to a Japanese friend), except for the shorts that were made exclusively for showing in the Ghibli Museum. But that will be remedied when I travel to Japan! I'm jealous of your confidence in reading Japanese sites. It's probably because I don't know many kanji yet, but whenever I run across a site like that audiobook one I give up quickly. It just seems too challenging. ありがとう！ Now we will see if the Japanese turns into nonsense when I post it or not.... Don't be jealous of my confidence in reading Japanese websites. I don't have any! Having gone through RTK helps, because I can make some guesses about what things mean. And with practice, I'm gradually learning more and more, but my reading is still really terrible. Mostly, I still read one character at a time, looking at each character very carefully and trying to figure out what it means. Long sentences are hard because I forget the beginning by the time I get to the end. Today, I've been looking at "Little Women". It's not as easy as I'd hoped. There are many longish sentences. Also, many words that I think should be written in kanji, are written in hiragana. This is a problem for me because if there are several unfamiliar words in a row and all are written in hiragana, I find it hard to know where one word ends and the next one begins. This makes it hard to look them up. As for Japanese websites, it's mostly a bit of guesswork and random clicking. Also, when you hold the mouse cursor over a link, you see the address at the bottom of you browser. Since Japanese characters can't be used in the address, it is written in romaji, or many times in English. So, you could say, I cheat a bit. Anyway, I'd better get back to studying. I only have a couple more days of intense study before I have to go back to work. Brun Ugle （茶色の梟） PS: It worked! Looks like you were right. Well, it's the end of another week, which means it's time for an update.
I'm still trying to figure out how to use RTK2. It's not as straight forward as RTK1 and http://kanji.koohii.com/ doesn't really have a good way to review the readings. So in the meantime, I've been using http://www.readthekanji.com/ for reading. I tried a few times to make my own cards for the readings in Anki, but I can't make up my mind how I want to do it. Also, it seems like it might be a lot of work and may be more efficient to just use the "read the kanji" website as well as the sentence cards I've been making. I've also been learning the writing of the kanji in RTK3, but I'm not planning to go so very fast. I plan to try to concentrate my efforts on other areas, but I feel confident that I can learn all the writings by summer in any case. I watched 魔女の宅急便 (Kiki's Delivery Service) twice this week. I had watched it several times before too. I originally watched it with subtitles so I would know what it was about, but since then I've always watched it without subtitles. I always felt that they talked so fast that I could barely catch any of the words. Then I found a site that had the script for that and several other movies. So I watched the movie earlier in the week while following along on the written script. I helped me to catch more of what was said, but they still seemed to talk very fast, and of course, it was hard to read the script and watch the movie at the same time. It was a big help though. Then today, something magical happened... I had been reading the script during the week and had put some of the lines in Anki to review. Then today when I watched the movie again, suddenly they weren't talking fast at all! At least not in the parts that I had reviewed. That encouraged me to put more of the lines in Anki. Maybe in a few weeks, I'll be able to understand the whole movie. So, my progress so far: RTK: 2063 kanji (writings) 10000 sentences method: 57 sentences Read the Kanji: JLPT4: tested 97 kanji (6 left); tested 453 words (70 left)-- 85 % correct on both JLPT3: tested 148 kanji (33 left) -- 82 % correct; tested 115 words (397 left) -- 74 % correct My scores are a little low on Read the Kanji, but this is because the first time I come across a new kanji or word, I often just choose to fail it rather than look it up. I get most of them right after having seen them once or twice. My plans for this week: It's going to be a tough week going back to work after a week and a half off, but I'm going to try to at least keep up with my reviews. I'd also like to learn at least 15 new RKT3 kanji. (It's not very many, but that's not where I want to put my energy right now.) And I'll work on picking sentence from the rest of 魔女の宅急便. That's where I will concentrate my efforts. I don't think I can finish it this week, but I want to do what I can. Wow, Brun, you're doing so well. I'm aiming to do two lessons of Pimsluer a week (each lesson for three days M-W, then Thursday off, then F-Sun) I made it okay through one. It really was simple but some of the phrases in two have turned to gibberish to my poor ears...

Don't forget to check out the other Studio Ghibli director, Takahata Isao. His films are often overlooked in favour of Miyazaki's, but I actually prefer them. They are much more grounded in reality than Miyazaki's and equally beautiful. My recommendations are おもひでぽろぽろ (Only Yesterday), which will give you a good grounding in Tohoku-ben (the strong dialect of Northern Japan) and 火垂るの墓 (Grave of the Fireflies), which is pretty much impossible to watch without crying! Thank you TixhiiDon! That's sounds great. I'm actually very interested in Tohoku-ben. So I will definitely look for that movie especially. Actually, my choice in movies has mostly been based on what I find on sale at the bookstore. In recent years, Japanese anime has become popular here and can be found quite cheaply. I buy every movie I find as long as it has the original Japanese sound track (a few only have Norwegian).

I think you're doing great. Just keep going and eventually the gibberish will become clearer. I find that I'm able to hear things more clearly if I've seen them written out before. I think I have some trouble hearing things clearly. I didn't get as much done this week as I'd hoped. It's been so cold here and I've spent a good part of the week thawing out pipes. My house is a little old and the plumbing isn't so good.... Anyway, I didn't get to make so many new cards and there were a few days that I didn't even get to do all my reviews. It's really hard to catch up again after missing a day or two. I've also started making cards in Anki based on the readings of the kanji in RTK2. It takes rather a long time to make cards. I wish I knew of a good site like kanji.koohii that had cards for the readings. So, my progress so far: RTK (writings): 2063 kanji -- same as last week RTK (readings): 16 cards -- 16 more than last week 10000 sentences method: 70 sentences -- 13 more than last week Read the Kanji: -- only used this once or twice JLPT4: tested 103 kanji (0 left); tested 523 words (0 left)-- 86 % correct on both JLPT3: tested 157 kanji (24 left) -- 84 % correct; tested 114 words (396 left) -- 74 % correct I'm not sure what my goals should be for the week, especially since I didn't achieve my goals this week in spite of how modest they were. But I will try again. I plan to learn 15 new RTK3 kanji, make 40 new RTK-readings cards and try to get up to 100 sentences. 1 person has voted this message useful |
