I can understand lots of spoken German, read articles, have a conversation, but I still
feel inadequate. Exactly a year ago, when I joined this forum, my German was awful. I
started learning new words, and I went to Germany for 4 months and came back much much
better.
But it isn't good enough, and I want to be fluent. I hate it when I hear a word I don't
understand, and I just want to know everything there is to know in the language.
Strong points:
I have a pretty good accent (recordings later)
Weak Points:
my grammar is fairly awful, especially my grasp of prepositions
my vocabulary is not awful, but it is inadequate if I want to be fluent.
My Plan:
I wasn't planning on making this log, but I'm hoping that it will motivate me once I
know other people are watching me. I seem to go in cycles of high motivation and cycles
where I worry more about other things in life. Right now I'm in a German cycle, so I
should take advantage of it!
Primary material will be:
-->Schlaflos in Muenchen podcast von Annik Rubens (I like it a lot)
-->Online Articles (i.e Der Spiegel, used for translation)
-->Dictionary ( I am a user of the Iversen word list method)
-->Books ( I own a few German books, but they are too advanced, all philosophic texts
which I hope to read someday)
-->Chatting (perhaps, I'm not sure how much time I'll have for this)
--> German forums online (I've registered for one, I'd like to practice OUTPUT because
most of my studying is INPUT)
SO - by 2011, I want to look back at THIS year just as I'm able to look back on 2008
and be amazed at how much I've improved. I want fluency, and I'm getting closer.
Today:
-Schlaflos in Muenchen 20 Minuten
-verschiedene Woerter nachgeschlagen (wie immer)
*bonus* ein bisschen Niederlaendisches Radio angehoert
(I'd like to learn Dutch as well, but I'm not going to lie to myself: German and all
the other things I have on my plate are PLENTY)
please encourage me!
Frohes neues Jahr :)

Also, next week I plan to go into German isolation for much of the day. I have
obligations that will require me to speak English and be in an English environment, but I
hope hearing massive amounts of German + studying etc. will jump start my TAC

Good luck. German is a great language and there's so much good stuff available to read or listen to.

Interessant. Mehr morgen
