TAC Team 2010 (Total Annihilation Challenge) Italian - Dutch - Latin
January 26, 2010 As my (only) new year’s resolution here’s my strategy for tackling the aforementioned languages. I have no prior knowledge with Dutch, my Italian is nothing but its cognates with Spanish (my native tongue) and with respect of Latin, I’ve checked many times different grammars (the passive way) but can’t still translate simple sentences. ITALIAN Translating: 4% Speaking: 0% Reading: 3% Writing: 1% Listening: 2% DUTCH Translating: 2% Speaking: 0% Reading: 1% Writing: 1% Listening: 0% LATIN Translating: 2% Speaking: 0% Reading: 2% Writing: 1% Listening: 0% Purposes Upgrade to a fifty per cent (50%) each ability. Specially on conversation. Weak points I have never been abroad and neither have contact with foreign speakers. I have got a busy agenda, accordingly there’s no time to read, write or watch films. In addition, we are devoid of resources in this country. That’s the challenge part! Strong points I’m willing to annihilate those languages. Plan 1. 4:10 am. Read my folded sheets of paper with wordlists. 2. 4:30 am. Translate useful phrases. 200 words (a paragraph and a half) in Italian. 3. 4:35 am. 200 words (a paragraph and a half) in Dutch. 4. 5:05 am. 200 words (a paragraph and a half) in Latin. 5. 5:35 am. Translate Wikipedia’s articles (200 words, a paragraph and a half) from Italian and Dutch*. 6. 6:35 am. Two lessons from Adler’s Practical Latin Grammar and Perpetual Exercises plus one lesson from Valenti Fiol’s Sintaxis Latina. 7. 7:25 am. Wrap it up by this hour and just then have breakfast. 8. During the rest of the day I’ll shadow some listening input (in my MP4, interviews from Youtube as audio files). 9. I shall be attentively eavesdropping people’s conversation while trying to render their Spanish sentences in Italian / Dutch / Latin. * When translating articles, the words more difficult will be racked up in a three-folded piece of paper (sort of Uncle Dave’s Goldlists / Iversen Method), in one column, alongside with their equivalents in Spanish. Two days after I’ll start my regime by reading the Spanish definitions and trying to write in the third column the foreign language words/expressions. Materials Online resources: WordReference, Wikipedia, Metrolyrics, Youtube, web sites about grammar and useful phrases. Printed resources: Gramática Sucinta de la Lengua Italiana, Teach Yourself Dutch (the 50’s book, I’ve photocopied it), Adler’s Practical Latin Grammar and Perpetual Exercises; Sintaxis Latina by Valenti Fiol, my comprehensive Ramón Sopena’s Latin dictionary in three volumes (all photocopies), and my ultra-light traveler mini Italian dictionary. By the last weeks of November 2010, I should be able to read without using dictionary more than two times per sentence, hear and grasp the general meaning of what it is said, write simple sentences and notes without bothering for the grammar (i.e. mastering it) and manage a conversation on Skype with a native speaker. 1 person has voted this message useful |
