I think I just had a Revelation in German... I just finished with an FSI unit for this week, and I decided to listen to some German rap while I surf the web. The words are almost slowed down and precise, I can easily pick out everything and they are all spaced perfectly. I don't know what all the words mean yet (that's a matter of time and vocabulary), but I couldn't be my pleased with my passive audio comprehension. :D :D
This week was successful!!!

Congratz, bro. I was listening to Spanish rap yesterday and I could somewhat understand (although I had glanced through the lyrics).

I had the same thing with Korean music a few months ago. I can follow along with Outsider (while reading the lyrics), but before it was one long stream of syllables coming out of his mouth.
But yeah, congrats. It's always good when music actually sounds like music.

I've been there with Spanish. If you keep listening and do vocabulary work, phrases and words will pop into your heard when you hear them, and the song will really come together. It's really amazing. Soon you'll understand on the fly. :) What song were you jammin' to?

There is a great book called "The Agony and the Ecstasy" that talks about the ups-and-downs of Michelangelo Buonarotti's life as an artist.
I often think of this book when I have the kind of "revelation" you are talking about. That is, your work hard for a long time on a language, with great frustration and the feeling that you have little to show for all the effort. Then, finally, there is a breakthrough, where everything seems to have come together all at once, and you find that, almost magically, you can suddenly understand almost everything.
Alas, the ecstasy is short lived, because the "revelation" turns out to not be a destination, but a stepping stone. Beyond this is the next "level" in the language, where you again find that you hardly understand anything. This is the agony, and the only thing that keeps you going is knowing that the next wave of ecstasy lies ahead. And this cycle keeps repeating.

The first song I found. I searched google for Spanish rap, found a resolved question on yahoo answers that had one. It was Chica Electrica by La Pozze Latina

I moved this thread to the Log room due to the personal nature. Congratulations just the same on this fine landmark!
