This year, I have vowed to seriously improve my Portuguese. I've been studying for about two years, and after 3 months in Brazil, I'd say I'm at B1 (low intermediate level).

What I used in the past
I went through the FSI Portuguese course, all of Pimsleur Portuguese (twice!) and a couple of teach yourself type books. I also put about 3,000 high-priority words into an SRS. I now think this wasn't the best way forward...

What I'm doing now
I've got really into the AJATT methodology and I am going to try to be as hard core as I can with this and see what results I get.

Here's how I've applied AJATT to my Portuguese study so far:

Removed all non-Portuguese language from my computer and MP3 player
Vowed to only read Portuguese novels
Tried to do as much as possible in Portuguese
Abandoned my Portuguese-English dictionary for a monolingual one
Instead of SRSing individual words, I'm putting sentences into the SRS. So far I have 170. AJATT recommends 10,000. This may take a while...

For me the biggest challenge is getting over the addiction to English. I've made a start though, and today, instead of learning about website building in English, I'm determined to use this site and not peep at anything in English: http://www.icmc.usp.br/ensino/material/html/

I'll let you know how it goes...

Great, I've found the Portuguese e-book and audio book versions of one of my favourite novels: Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. It's made up of lots of short chapters so it should be easy to digest.

I'm going to try going systematically through each chapter like this:

Read/ listen 1
Read/ listen 2
compare English text
add sentences with new vocabulary to SRS
Read/ listen 3
