Hello, I'm new to the forum and my immediate reason for registering is to ask a question. At the moment I'm in China and I've picked up studying Mandarin seriously again a while ago. This time I'm using Anki to study and review words of some texts and mp3's and find that very useful. I'm also thinking about inputting other things I want to review regularly. I think the uses for flashcard programs are much more than just rote learning of single words.
As I said, I use Anki myself, but I'm looking for another program that I want to use for teaching. I teach English here and a big obstacle to making progress for students is memorising of new words and phrases. Ideally they would all use a flash card program at home to review things every day themselves, but many of them don't have a computer at home or just wouldn't do it.
Although it wouldn't be so finely adjusted to individual student's levels and memory, it would still be very useful to review things systematically with flashcard in class. The reason I don't want to use Anki or similar programs, is that the intervals are periods of time, for example 8 hours, 3 days, 5 days, 10 days, 3 weeks, etc. Because the classes are only on Saturday and Sunday, this would not be suitable. I know you can set the length of the intervals and put decks on hold, but I can't think of a simple way to make that work well.
What I hope to find is a program that counts the intervals in sessions, or times you open the program (maybe with a minimum amount of time before it becomes the next session). For example if I study words today, then come back one week later to review them, that would be session 2. So maybe the intervals would be to review a lessons words the following class, then review 2 classes later, then 5, 10, 15, or whatever the intervals would be. It would also be good to be able to give a general evaluation of how well the group knows it such as "good", "ok", "difficult" and that effecting the intervals but it's not really necessary.
If anyone knows of a flashcard program with that basic function, that would be great. Otherwise suggestions for how to use programs like Anki to review things like this would also be helpful.
Thanks,
Chris

May I suggest that daily computer generated personalized quizzes using the Leitner algorithm might be a good way to do spaced repetition.
