Right now there are two major events for language geeks coming up in or near Berlin,
and I was wondering if anyone else is going to them, so that we could organize a forum
meet-up.
One is the Expolingua language
fair where you can check out the latest language-learning materials, take mini-courses
of 45 minutes to get a quick introduction to many languages and inform yourself about
career opportunities and language holidays. The stands at the fair are mixed, some
organized by companies and some by embassies or cultural institutions, typically giving
away a lot of free materials. Some highlights for me last year were trying out my
aptitude as a simultaneous translator in an actual EU translator's booth, taking a
course in basic Basque and watching the Confucius Institute's demonstration of Chinese
calligraphy. Expolingua Berlin is taking place from November 19th to the 21st this
year, at the Russian culture house.
Later this year I will be going to the Junulara E-Semajno,
a one-week event for several hundred young(ish) Esperanto speakers around New Year's.
This is traditionally a good place to practice many languages including Toki Pona, and
it will be possible to take official CEFR-based exams for Esperanto, to attend
Esperanto courses and a large variety of other courses and lectures that the
participants organize, e. g. language courses, juggling, dancing and so on. In the
evenings there will be live concerts, shows and movies from around the world subtitled
in Esperanto. I particularly like the international atmosphere, coming together with
Esperanto speakers from lots of countries, many European ones of course but also China,
Japan, Niger, Brazil... The Junulara E-Semajno is taking place at Burg this year, a
small town in the Spreewald natural reserve, not far from Berlin.
I'm thinking if more forum members are going to these events, we should arrange to meet
up and practise languages together, or have a RL argument about the benefits of Assimil
vs. FSI ;-) Also, I'm just now planning my contribution to the program of the JES and
wondering if an introduction to Latin, German or Chinese characters would be more
interesting for people, or if I should trace the evolution of Latin to French, given
that this year's theme is "Past - present - future". I will definitely be bringing my
Go game; with enough participants we can have another tournament like in 2008.

Yay! I'll be going to both events too.
I just looked at the Expolingua site, and it appears that the entrance fee is only €5 per day, or €7 for all 3 days. Also, my couch is available, if anyone needs a place to stay for a few days.

I'm not going, as I'm nowhere near Berlin this year, but I'd like to say I think it's a great initiative to make people on the forums aware of these kinds of events. I'd had gone if I'd been closer. If more of these sorts of things pop up, please do post about them on the forums like Sprachprofi did now!

If I can juggle my prebooked German appointments, unfortunately not already in Berlin, I would love the Expolingua event.... and on expenses too. You could see first hand [ear?] exactly how bad my German has become, but then again it would be a very good reason to push German up the re-learn ladder.
I can't say that I can generate any enthusiasm for artificial languages though, apart from the concept of an artifical language as an intermediary in artificial intelligence, data mining and possibly machine translation applications.
Why, oh why, do we not have this kind of thing in England. Or do we?

Why not try some subjective predictions about the future of language ?
Latin > French [insert other PIE language as you feel] > The Future
Would be great on YouTube too.

Expolingua sounds great. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to go. Maybe I can make it next year.
Are the mini-courses conducted in German?
