I'm very tentatively planning on going to the JES. It's very uncertain, but I'm hoping to make it. I doubt I'll be arriving at the start of it though.

Okay Expolingua people, the big day is almost upon us.
Remember that our meet-up is on Saturday at 12:15 (i. e. you can see a little of the
fair or attend a lecture until then) and we'll go have lunch. We will meet on the
sidewalk outside of Expolingua because I fear that the entrance area of the fair
will be too crowded.
Group around Doviende, he's the easiest to spot: tall guy with glasses and two red
braids.
If you're coming by public transport, remember that a single ticket (except
Kurzstrecke) can be used as a day ticket on Saturdays and Sundays in Berlin this
time of the year, so you only need one ticket.
I will also be at the fair on Friday, find me at the Esperanto stand most of the day.
Friday is the best day if you're looking to take language classes; check out the
program beforehand.

First day of Expolingua!
I slept in late, so I missed the Korean class in the morning, but Sprachprofi later assured me that it was crap anyway. I got there in the afternoon and attended 3 events: Russian, Finnish, and Hindi.
Russian was quite entertaining, since the teacher was fantastic. She had an amazing sense of humour and good delivery (and it was also rather amusing for me to hear a stereotypical Russian accent in German). The content was a bit lacking, since she mostly focused on the absolute beginner phrases rather than giving us an overview of the language, but I guess not much can be expected from a one-hour course. I spent most of the class trying to analyze the distinctions in her consonants, since to me it appears to be entirely random which consonants get an additional velarization. If I had money to burn though, I'd totally sign up for further Russian courses with her.
Next was Finnish, which was also quite entertaining. It was the opposite style of lecture, where she gave us a good overview of the features of the language, with a lot of humourous examples, rather than just running us through "hello, how's it going" phrases like the Russian teacher. There was a nice example about long and short vowels, that consisted entirely of words like "koko", "kokko", and "kooko".
Finally, there was the Hindi lecture, which was mostly just an Assimil pitch. It was given by the German translator of Assimil Hindi ohne Mühe, and he was mostly trying to explain the Assimil method, and tell everyone why they should buy his book. I thought it was moderately informative, but he wasn't particularly skilled at holding the crowd's attention. At the end, someone asked what they could do to continue on in their Hindi studies after finishing the Assimil book, and the guy really didn't have much of an answer (because he had nothing else to sell), but I mentioned that there was a Hindi version of Harry Potter that they could try, which got some curious glances. I explained that I had learned a lot of my German in the past year through reading Harry Potter, so then they took me a bit more seriously. I really enjoyed it when someone asked "*only* Harry Potter?", to which I replied "Of course not. I also used German Star Trek", to great effect. ;)
I talked further with several of the people present, and told them how they should come check out HTLAL, and I think they might join us tomorrow for our little lunch meetup. It seems like each of these talks are just full of language nerds, not all of which have seen the full variety of language resources available on the internet, but it's going to be fun to try to talk with more of them throughout the rest of the weekend.
bis Morgen! (see you tomorrow! well...some of you, anyway)

Is this meet already over? :( Would anyone be interested in organizing another meet up independent from Expolingua?
