What exactly is the difference between these three categories? It seems to me it would be easier to lump everything into two categories: "fluent" and "not fluent yet," and then just keep studying everything, if you're really serious about languages.

That implies that you have to want to be fluent to be classed as being serious about languages.

No, the "if you're serious" clause modifies the clause directly preceding it: "and then just keep studying everything." I added the "if you're serious" part to help motivate him, assuming (and sorry if I was wrong here) that anyone who is "really serious about languages" would naturally want to "keep studying everything," either out of a desire for constant improvement or simply because s/he enjoys the languages in question. I apologize if this wasn't clear; I certainly don't intend to sound elitist. I only speak from my experience of the language-learners on this board.

EDIT: My original post would have been clearer if I'd put a semicolon after the phrase "'fluent' and 'not fluent yet'", I suppose.

First of all I did not do no wrong to anybody so for those people who were constantly criticizing me
throughout this thread I am sorry that you don't have the brain to actually read over things I write and try to
make sense of it all. The "languages I need to work on" means the languages that I am sure I am NOT
fluent in. So if you are going to criticize me, do it in a nice polite, and considerate way like very few people
in this thread. You don't believe anything I say because you seem to be thinking that 'since he has autism,
he'll probably not know what he is talking about'. Also for those people who were crazy enough to think that
I just chat with any native across the street, do you know what LiveMocha is? I chatted with dozens of
natives there, and I actually asked them if they HONESTLY thought I was fluent or not in those 8 languages
after a good amount of conversations and they said YES. Also why did you think that I made a list called
"Languages I need to work on", well because the languages that I need a good amount of work on, I am
NOT fluent in, and many natives have said and claimed that I was NOT fluent in those languages. So all in
all unlike the people in this thread who refuse to think before they say anything, I have actually used my
brain, went to LiveMocha, etc. So if you still believe that I am stupid and crazy after reading all this, you
should learn more about autism and how it's a sin to put autistic people down every chance gotten. I was
using my brain this time. As for everybody else thanks for the nice polite criticism.

I have actually took Richard Simcott's advice and revisited my language abilities, and again if you are going
to criticize me again after this post then I don't know what else to say to you people.

You are and were one of the only ones in this thread that was honest
but nice, polite and considerate unlike some other people in this thread.
Thanks. :)

Just a quick note: if someone says they "like" your (whatever
language), that doesn't necessarily mean that you're fluent in it.
;) I don't want to be a downer, but you ought to know that
many people, especially speakers of more exotic languages,
will often be so excited that you can say even a few words of
their language that they will over-compliment you. I've had this
happen myself, and although it's a nice feeling, it should not be
taken as absolute proof that you speak that language
fluently.

Well the difference is is that I have chatted with those large
number of natives through LiveMocha many times and I
actually have asked them if they honestly thought I was fluent.
Yes you are right, you cannot just apply by what any random
person says. For example, natives really like my Indonesian but they claimed that I was not fluent in
Indonesian and that's fine with me. In fact I am motivated to continue.

Well, that's what matters! I'm glad you are motivated to continue studying, and I support your efforts! Also, thank you for the nice words, I know how easy it is to come across as rude on the Internet due to the lack of tone of voice, so I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt.

All that said, I have to tell you (and I hope you don't take this the wrong way) that I think you've begun overreacting to people, and things will only get worse from here. In particular, assuming that all the negative responses towards you were "autism-bashing" – I would advise you NOT to make that assumption. People here are trying to treat you like they would treat anyone else on this forum, no matter whether they were autistic or not. If you start writing big angry responses where you blame everyone for "being mean to you because you're autistic," you will find that people's tempers will fray rapidly. This approach you're using is called the "victim mentality" (type it into Google if you want to know more about it) and it will not win you any friends.

I hope my words don't seem too harsh. I really am just trying to warn you where this attitude will lead. There's still every possibility that you could make friends in this forum and take advantage of all the wonderful resources and knowledge that it offers. But I've found that with most established communities on or off the internet, newcomers are received much more warmly if they enter with a humble and respectful attitude, and try to refrain from boasting and picking fights.

Again, let me emphasize that I am only saying these things to help you out, and I really do wish you the best in your language studies, and hope you continue to make the best possible use of your natural gift for languages.

Cesare, regardless of your language abilities, I would appreciate it if you could please refrain from posting multiple times, which is against the rules of the forum.

If you have finished writing a post and suddenly have a brainwave which you simply must share with us, please edit your original post and include it there rather than write a one-liner in a new post.
