Maybe the fake-officiator was the one that offered the renewal of the vows in the local language and set them up. Maybe the couple were arrogant jerks who gave the staff hell during their whole trip. Maybe the couple really did love the sound of the language.

Considering how little we really know about this incident and the extent to which I've read about people on this forum immersing/indulging themselves in languages they're never going to properly learn, I think this couple is getting a rap.

No, that really doesn't have to be conceded. A resort aimed at what they did is not a place where abuse seems far more likely, regardless of language. One case of abuse doesn't say much - you can easily find examples of abusive officiators in monolingual marriage settings as well.

It's my wedding, you're the officiator and you try to abuse my soon-to-be wife and me...
You speak some god-forgotten gibberish - you'll probably get away with it.
You speak something I understand - you'll probably get punched in the face.

I'd say the opportunity to make fun of foreigners in a 'secret language' is precisely what makes the difference in likelihood.

BTW if I found out later I'd only blame myself for letting it happen, although I'd as well make sure not a single more penny gets in such rude people's hands.

Of course they didn't, just as several of us here did and just happened to say so.

Why? Because I am as bored as anyone else here who is ready to spend another minute discussing things that are very likely completely irrelevant to our lives? ;)

Which incidentally is about to change when my last video download finishes.

It could happen anywhere. "The least insight into human nature" should not come with an expectation of being abused in situations where such abuse is rather rare; that sort of pessimism is a recipe for disaster.

I'd rather call it realism. I don't expect foreigners to 'abuse' me like this, but I am well aware that it can happen. Not that I care, anyway, because if sticks and stones, let alone words that I don't understand, uttered by some fool.

BTW it really disappointed me how many people in this forum did precisely the same kind of thing - you can read about it in another thread called 'secret languages', or the like.

People's expectations of foreign speakers of their language appear to be rising, in my experience. I can remember receiving a few apparently contemptuous remarks about not understanding more Italian - particularly dialect words in the South of Italy. Despite the Italians' reputation for accepting foreigners' use (abuse?!) of their language only found this with about half the people I spoke to, despite an intermediate knowledge. I think because travel is much easier some nationalities are becoming irritated by the number of foreigners they encounter, particularly those with a less than perfect grasp of their language.
