Wikipedia has a pretty good page on which languages were historically Lingua Franca. I am more
interested, however, in the future. I guess we could agree Mandarin is on the rise. But are there any other trends ? In light of computer translation technologies I am leaning towards an approach where the goal would be Fluency in few very important languages over cursory knowledge in many. Let the software sort out the "loose change". Does this make sense ? My mind instinctively is trying to do the opposite. It keeps trying to go after all languages at the same time.
