With Dutch speakers I don't feel so much of a "Hands off!" as a "Why the heck...?" But they're welcoming and encouraging, and in one case, when I lapsed into English, I received a stern, "Dat is geen Nederlands" to keep me honest. We're talking a very small sample, here -- just the few Dutch people who've passed my way.

I am sorry that you had that experience. I went for a holiday to Israel many years ago, and had learned a little Hebrew before I left, and I got nothing but smiles and encouragements for the few words I could actually say correctly. On the other hand I felt I was in language heaven, since my friends spoke a ton of languages, including Ladino, the Spanish spoken by the Jews who were expelled from Spain in 1492. To experience someone speaking a 500 year old dialect as their mother tongue, was something I will not forget as long as I live. 4 persons have voted this message useful |
