Well, depending on the language, it might make you aware that immigrants or members of ethnic minorities are actually human.

It makes me sad to think that it would take so much for anyone to realize that. :(

My main motivation is to see if I am even mentally capable of learning languages. Having
been a language dunce at school, I always assumed my brain was wired the wrong way. These
days, my language learning is a big experiment to see whether or not a language dunce can
rewire his brain and actually get half decent at speaking a foreign language.

I'm no expert on the matter, but I'd presume that it may be easier to find a method of learning better adapted to your brains wiring than to change yourself for some system of learning. :)

Studying and learning languages made me more compassionate to people who struggled with my native English.

When I travelled, it gave me a chance to play superhero to people who spoke English and struggled with one of my target languages.

I have learned most of my Turkish from immigrants who come from there, for example. Yet political parties in various parts of Europe gain votes by playing on feeling against Muslims, Roma, Poles or whoever happens to be Scapegoat of the Month.
