1) Mandarin because I like the sound of it, I have contact with many Chinese seafarers in my job and China is fast becming a major global power.
2) Arabic because I like the sound of it and I practice Arabic calligraphy. I am interested in Arab culture and the language is widespread.
3) Next I will learn Russian because it also sounds good to my ears, I have have contact with many Russian speaking seafarers and Russia is also becoming a major power in the Pacific and Asian regions.

For me personally - I don't care how complex its grammar is, how similar it is to languages I've already studied, how many speakers it has, who thinks it's the hardest language in the world, how many people I can impress by showing it off, if it's in some language branch I haven't touched yet etc.
All I care about is if I will actually use it with human beings. Since I travel, the choice is clear - I pick a country for various reasons (culture, standard of living, cost of life, climate, etc.) and if I don't already speak its language, then I will make a point to become as fluent as possible in it in a short time.

Ditto. These days I like to travel and meet women. I choose countries that I find interesting and am also attracted to
the ladies, and learn the language. It's a very enjoyable hobby.

Korean - I'm half Korean. I like Korean music (hiphop and pop.) I like the dramas (no, not every single Korean drama is a melodrama. I've hardly watched any melodramas. And there are very few melodramas produced per year.) I love the variety shows in Korea (Asia in general. I hate variety/reality shows in the U.S.) I like East Asian history and East Asian martial arts too.
Japanese - I like Japanese RPGs, anime, manga, dramas, music, ninjas, samurai, etc.
For both - the girls.

I didn't chose neither English nor German. I learned English in school (it was a must), and now I learn German, because I live in Germany. I didn't chose them, they chosed me.

In my case, the people who speak it, and their culture.
Practicality is a big factor but it wouldn't have been enough. I could've gotten by here just fine with English alone, but throw in the people and culture and I can't resist the lure of it all.

I picked Russian and Spanish so I could speak to my friends in thir native languages and I ended up studying Turkish because when Borders went under they reduced all of their books and I bought most of the Turkish resources available as they were cheap.
