It is mentioned in the "Teach Yourself" series book on the Middle East. I forget the author's name.
I find the story plausible, since the Falangists were known to kill Palestinians, but were handicapped by the fact that Palestinians don't look very different from Lebanese and are also Arabic speakers. There have been numerous times in history when shibboleths have been used to distinguish ethnic groups.

I've heard that story about the way Lebanese and Palestinians say tomato too. One of my teachers who was Lebanese told us about it. It's definitely plausible.

Wow, I didn't know that story. Now whenever I have a small difference with someone, maybe I'll just shrug expressively and say "You say bandura, I say banadura..."
..except considering the historical implications, maybe I actually won't.
