Dear lord, 900 hours! Can I ask where does this number you're reaching for come from? And do you have any kind of benchmarks along the way to see if you're "on schedule" in terms of learning?
I ask because I'm a little past 300 hours in Italian and hadn't actually planned to go all the way to 1000 :)

Well I read this FSI report and I recall the number 600 being thrown around. Do you still have that reference maybe? The one I saw is called "Lessons learned from fifty years of theory and practice in government language teaching" from 1999. In fact it says 575-600 for the languages we are after.
No matter. It's inspiring to see the drive you have with all the hours you've put in. I've been at it for just over 3 months and I've been able to spend a lot of time on it, sure hope I can keep it up.
Well, as to my language learning experience, I don't really know very much about it. The last new language I started was English, at school, 15 years ago. So I'm rather new to the whole independent learning thing, as you are. Italian is my first. I'm pleased to say that I've made a lot of progress in what is not very long time. I can read a paper without missing much, I could probably get through a conversation too (although I haven't practiced oral skills much yet). My focus has been very grammar heavy, actually because I had a textbook and it seemed like the best thing to use at the time. I'm almost done with it now, and it's supposed to cover just about all the grammar and language fundamentals. My biggest weakness is vocabulary, I'm not crazy about cramming it and I haven't done much reading yet (but I want to start more after I finish my textbook).
French is my nemesis, however. I took it in high school and failed to learn much. I hope to conquer it in the near future!
