This is the main post, it may be edited!

---

04/26/2009 Alright, I'm starting this over again and I'm going to do it correctly!
I need to get organized and I figure having a language learning log will help me. I started one awhile ago on here
but it was kind of all over the place, so I wanted to start fresh.

I am currently studying two languages: German and Spanish.

Goal: I will be applying to the University of Vienna in about three months. I
will be applying to both theTranscultural Communication (the new name for the Translation and Interpretation
program) and Romance
Language studies programs. To get into the University you must have a level of German of B2 at the time of
application.
The applications begin in July and last all the way until October but I do not want to leave it to the last minute as
I am an international student and it may be a bit of a longer process for me, so I hope to reach the B2 level of
German by July.

But it gets a bit more complicated!

My level of German AND Spanish must be C1 to get into the Transcultural Communication program, but the
language proficiency test for this program is not until October, so I have a bit more time for that! And well, I
currently live in Spain... so that helps a little bit. :)

I have recently rearranged my daily schedule to allow a lot more time for studying because that is currently what
is most important. I will be posting here daily (or as close to daily as I can manage) to update on my progress.

Thanks Williy, I'll check out your log too!

I've only done a bit of actual studying in the past few days but I have been watching a lot of the German TV show
Türkisch für Anfänger! I can understand most of it without subtitles, so that is encouraging! :)

- I was speaking quite a bit of German yesterday with my roommate.

and of course I speak a bit of Spanish during the day doing everyday things here. :)

Spanish:

- I did an Intercambio with a Spanish girl during the afternoon yesterday and while we were out I picked up the
Hugo Spanish Complete course from Casa del Libro and did the Week 1 and Week 2 material today. I already
knew 99% of the material but I still wanted to start from the beginning to get a refreshment on some of the
basics (masculine and feminine nouns, when to use "ser" and when to use "estar", and even a few new Vocab
words) before I move onto the advanced part. I'm going to try to do about "2 weeks" of work a day (about 2
hours) and move onto the advanced course in about a week. This sounds like a lot but if it's like it was today
then it will be a good pace. I was really missing something like this in my study plan, something concrete and
complete that I can do a bit of each day a long with all of the extra stuff (newspapers, music, movies,
magazines, radio, flash cards, etc.) because what I had been doing was JUST the extra stuff and nothing
concrete, so I felt totally lost! I really like the Hugo course so far and from peeking at the more advanced stuff it
seems like a great course so I ordered Hugo German complete from Amazon today, I'm looking forward to it
getting here!

- I picked up the DS game "Mind your language! Lern Deutsch!" today just to have something to do to practice
while riding on the metro. I'm not sure if it's really any good or not yet, but it seems ok! It's definitely a nice little
extra to have.

- I'm trying to practice rolling my Rs by doing an exercise a Spanish teacher taught me and by reading this
http://www.wikihow.com/Roll-Your-%22R%22s (As a Canadian I had to smile about the "Rrrroll up the Rrrrim to
win!" mention!)

Update:

German:
- I ended up playing that Lern Deutsch! DS game that I mentioned earlier for nearly two hours, it's not so bad!
That being said, it could be a lot better and I really think that there should be more language-learning games
for the DS. Well maybe not more, but at least one really good one, I think there is potential for a language
learning game to work on the DS.

I'm now watching Turkisch für Anfänger and noting down new words in a word document.

Spanish

- Completed "Week 3" and "Week 4" of the Hugo Spanish Complete course. I'm progressing really quickly as it is
mostly stuff that I know already but it's also helping me a lot with reviewing things I was still unsure about (for
example today: este, esta, eso, esa, esos, esas, aquél, aquella, etc.)

German

- Watched two episodes of Türkisch für Anfänger.

Spanish

- Learned Bathroom vocabulary words (I got a one month membership to studyspanish.com and that is the first
vocab topic)
- I googled for more bathroom vocabulary to make my flash cards more complete, I ended up with 47 flash cards.

- I finished Week 5 of Hugo Spanish, I found it a bit more difficult but VERY helpful.

Yesterday:

Spanish
- I worked on the next vocabulary section (Crime and punishment - El crimen y el castigo) on studyspanish.com
- I have a few TV channels now! I just went to a cheap shop, bought a TV cable for 1.20 euros and now I've got a
few TV channels. I didn't realize it would work or else I would have done it a long time ago! We've had a TV in the
apartment for months but it's only been for gaming, haha.

German
- I played a little of the "Lern Deutsch!" DS game on the Metro.
- I watched nearly five episodes of Türkisch für Anfänger.

This week I have been doing various things:

- I am on Week 7 of Hugo's Spanish in Three Months
- I have been watching A LOT of Spanish television and understanding mostly everything. (Even guessing a few
of the Wheel of Fortune answers before the contestants! For example "El conde Dracula y Transilvania" and
"Robert de Niro y Taxi Driver" Well, I guess the second one if technically English, pero bueno. :)
- I've been using the "Genius" app for mac to make flashcards.
- I've been reviewing vocabulary on studyspanish.com
- I've read the news on elpais.com

- I've watched more episodes of Türkisch für Anfänger
- I translated a few articles that my boyfriend wrote in German from his video game blog.
- I've been listening to FM4 from Vienna mostly whenever I'm not watching Spanish TV.

My Hugo German Complete arrived today so I will begin that tomorrow!
