This year I am making my third attempt to upkeep a log in which I can notate my progress and hopefully hold myself to a standard. I previously felt I had spent to much time writing posts, draining time that could be used for study so I will try to keep myself to one or two per week. My wonderful school schedule will keep me cramming, so I will focus on my French and Russian for the remainder of the school year and leave the commencement of Swahili and Khmer for the boundless amount of time available in the summer. So for a quick break down of strategy, I'll go over each language.
French
My first language which has benefited from school studies with only slight efforts on my part to improve. According to my teachers, at the level I am currently at I am familiar with all major grammatical topic necessary to speak fluently in French. Therefore I will be breaking my strategy into two targeted prongs. The first will be to review all of the grammar I have learned through a massive book verb conjugation exercises and internet sources. The second prong will cover building my vocabulary. I had a system going for a while last summer where I would print out stuff from Le Monde and Le Figaro, highlight vocabulary which I didn't know and memorize what I could. I like this method because it allows me to personalize my vocab to fit my interests. For instance, I could care less about asking how to use the fax machines even though it seems many courses I've seen obsesses over it. Anyways, I will continue to study French in school, so it shouldn't be too difficult to progress.
Russian
This is going to be my big one this year. For going on two years now, I've been grappling with this monster and inevitably falling prey to brain cramps, and depression as I overwhelm myself with noun cases. Thus I will attempt in a completely different manner to break through. Previously, I had struggled with mounds of grammar to large to handle en mass and lacked the vocabulary necessary to use or comprehend what I was learning. So now I have already began a calculated consumption of vocabulary via the simple memorization. With a solid base of knowledge I will begin to branch out and discover the grammatical concepts I need. I have TY Russian as well as a more in depth reference grammar which will aid me. Otherwise, I hope to be reading online news sources by, at the latest, June.
Swahili
My Swahili is extremely basic and the course I am on is not effective at all. I hope to branch out as soon as school work starts winding down and start drilling vocabulary. I foresee relatively quick progress, as I have a much easier time pronouncing Swahili as opposed to Russian. I can already see that I'm probably going to need a decent reference grammar and a dictionary. However, if I can get into a good pattern at the start of the year, I should be running full steam going into the summer.
Khmer
My long shot this year will be Khmer. This choice could be subject to change, however, I like to keep exotic languages in the corner my eye for brief wanderlust bouts. By this point I've realized that to realistically learn a language a grammar source and dictionary are a must in my language learning forays. Thus resources dictate what I dabble in. I will choose once I gain the appropriate amount of time to wander.
So there is my plan. Time to dive in and see what happens.
