Today was the day I realized for the first time that I speak Portuguese. I SPEAK PORTUGUESE. I had a full
conversation with my teacher without even realizing what was happening. For the first time that I've noticed I
didn't have to put conscious effort into constructing the sentences; they just sort of "happened." The best part is
that I wasn't even expecting it--not this soon. It took me probably eight years to get to this point in Spanish, and
I've only had a year of Portuguese classes. Now I know that after Spanish Portuguese should be a walk in the park,
but I just couldn't believe it. I know I have a long way to go and that my journey will never truly end, but at least
for now I have won the small victory of basic fluency.

Congratulations. It must be the active version of the thing called an 'epiphany moment' on this forum, though I have never heard or seen thios expression anywhere else.
