Will Korean catch up to Japanese? | ||

Given the rapid development of S. Korea, the potential for a combined Korea that could potentially surpass Japan's GDP/capita in the next 20 years and total GDP by 2050 (according to Goldman Sachs), is Korean going to surpass Japanese as a language of choice for foreign learners?
I also add that Korea is experiencing a city building boom, skyscraper boom, a media exportation boom and a tourism boom. With the potential combined Korea having 70million+ speakers and the fall in Japan's population and potential economic stagnation, Korean could catch up to japanese in the future, no? If you were to choose, given the current and future status, which one of these languages would you choose? Dunno why, but Modern Korean literature seems to never attain the fame comparable as that of the Japanese. Maybe it has something to do with the intrinsic quality, maybe just some more of notability will do.

I'm not entirely sure why, but I find Korean much more interesting than Japanese. I think it has to do with a combination of things, like it's relatively neglected status as a foreign language among Westerners (compared to Japanese) and the fact that, to me, it sounds more interesting than just about any other language I have heard.

Forget sound, language factors. I'm talking about language utility, Korea's development and economy, etc.. These are the issues i'm interested in, not the aesthetic or intellectual aspects of the language.

Then you need a crystal ball, not an internet forum. Prognoses about the economic future of growing countries over more than a couple of decades are notoriously unreliable. If those are your main concerns, neither Japanese nor Korean is ideal for you. If you're going by trends and demographic factors, as your post implies, I would point out that South Korea's

I plan on learning South Korean, not because of any economical reasons or anything, just because it seems cool. It's the only Oriental language I want to learn because it has an alphabet, and because I'm interested in South Korea as a country.
