Like what? If you didn't want to live in China right now b/c it has a low quality of life standard, what is the point of learning the language? A future hope that China will someday be a better place to live or what?

Most people in the world learn English not so that they can go live in an English speaking place. Same applies to Chinese. I'm sure there are other threads listing dozens of reasons for learning Chinese besides wanting to go live there so have a look at them.

Of course you don't see any, you live in America, where the people who DO want to live in
an English-speaking country come to live. I live in Japan, where there are literally
millions of people learning English for all sorts of reasons, with the vast majority of
them quite happy to continue living in Japan. I'm sure that you can add many millions
more to that number from all the non-English speaking countries of the world.
If you want to learn Japanese or Korean with a view to living in one of those countries,
that's great - go ahead and get started! If environmental pollution in China concerns you
to such a great extent, don't bother with Mandarin. To be honest, I really can't see what
you're worried about.

Hmm... Chinese is a great language and the language of a developing superpower. I'm interested in the language and country, but the place has severe problems and I probably won't be living there soon. However, I think its worth learning the language to at least an advanced level, as things will probably improve in the future and it could be useful for business (even in western jobs) and tourism reasons.
I would like to learn Japanese or Korean too, not both though. However, I wouldn't know which to pick, as it seems Korea is on track to surpass Japan in GDP/capita and cultural exports yet Japan has always interested me.

And you're sure that's the kind of motivation that'll keep you going for years and years, hunched over thousands of tiny characters with no helpful indication of how you should read them, being tormented by third-class dubbed movies, or - worse - original Chinese movies, to acquire just a modicum of listening comprehension (which won't help you shit when you get in an area where people speak with accent), and.. ah, just forget handwriting, if you want to get anywhere in the next 10 years. Are you sure? Just saying..

What is the purpose of your reply? It sounds like you have an agenda to me. What are you trying to say, just don't bother? Not everyone can live in China BTW. Work doesn't phase me, this is a language learning forum.
Oh, and it doesn't bother me to learn the language over 15 years slowly at all.

You make it sound as though this is something you can do over coffee one morning!!
And as others have said, Korea won't be overtaking Japan in terms of GDP any time
soon, probably not even in your lifetime. Not that that should deter you from learning
Korean, if that's what you want to do.
