As for the paranoia behind warnings "not to speak the enemy's language," it is easy to apply today's standards to the actions of almost 70 years ago...but it is not always fair.

While it's true that it's often not fair to condemn something that was done in a different time based on today's hindsight, I think criticism is warranted in this instance.

-- I must confess I cannot find anything to support the claim that people were told "not to speak the enemy's language." I have found references where they were told to be cautious speaking to strangers ("Lose lips sink ships.")

That doesn't mean it didn't happen. It would be helpful if there were some sort of source to reference.

As I mentioned, my father grew up speaking German and spoke with a German accent even in the Navy during WWII. He states he often spoke with other German speakers in the military in German and was not cautioned or rebuked.

If you are able to find a government edict referring to this, I would love to see it.

I don't think there was a government edict, but I have seen posters made during the war saying, "Don't Speak The Enemy's Language!" Google it, then click on "Images" for examples.

Okay- remember a few years back when there was serious problems for anoyne of middle-eastern decent? I think there was even call for us not to let "those people" into our schools. The government was the catalyst, but the government didn't ban learning middle-eastern languages or even put any of them in internment camps or start publishing "All middle easterners are the devil" propaganda. There was plenty of fear-mongering to get us to go along with a war, but it wasn't against middle easterners in America, they just got caught up in it. The government didn't help, but we can't forget the power of peer pressure. It acts on adults just as much as it does teenagers- and that's what does the real damage. The government may have started it, but it didnt' force us to start seeing everyone of middle eastern decent as evil spies, or to decide that 'muslim' is the worst thing a person could be.

There's a big different between the government banning German and overwhelming social pressure to not be German. I'm pretty sure it was mostly the latter, because I haven't heard of any bans on learning German, either, just social pressure not to speak it. Just like people saw people who were in any way middle eastern or muslim as unAmerican spies, people did the same to people who were German (or Italian or Japanese). Speaking German in public, even if there was no legal repurcussions, was probably a bad move socially. The government's hands aren't clean, but it's not like the government has to go around jailing all Germans for people to think that people of German decent are bad just because we're at war with a country they're no longer a part of.

The only reason Japanese and Italian don't get the same rep is because of anime and the Vatican.

Does burning down mosques count?

There have been other incidents of mosque desecrations. Nazi graffiti, pig heads at
doorsteps, etc.

Justice served in this case though. But you asked for an example.

Hey people, if you don't have anything nice to say about German, then stop posting in this thread! The topic here is the greatness of the German language!

Your views on violence against Moslems in the United States has nothing to do with the topic, or with languages.
