The anthem of the European Union officially doesn't have any lyrics but Beethoven based the melody on a poem by the German poet Friedrich Schiller called "Ode an die Freude" (Ode to Joy) so when it's sung, the German lyrics are often used.
Personally, I had no idea Europe even had an anthem until a couple of weeks ago but now that I do, it adds to my motivation to learn German one day.

Oktoberfest! It's one of the biggest events of it's kind in the world. You don't need to
be in Munich to celebrate either, as it's becoming increasingly common to see Oktoberfest
celebrations around the
world.Wikipedia Oktoberfest

If you know English you are already well on the way there :-) and many Germans will talk German back to you even if your accent isn't that convincing.

I intend to learn it primarily for the literature, although the ability to speak with
Germans will be nice, too, when I eventually get there. I also have German on both sides
of my family; my paternal grandparents spoke Yiddish, and my maternal Grandfather spoke
German (son of German/Austrian immigrants).

Kind of true. Though not written extremely in depth, the language series "Kauderwelsch"
has many books in not so common languages like Faroese :-)
