Hello, i would like a claim verified that bases itself on an Egyptian word for Iron. The
rominsation of the word is as follows..

'baa en pet'

I think it means 'iron' but has a literal translation of' from the sky' or something like
that.

I would just like a confirmation of this, or perhaps hieroglyphics.

Thanks.

Yay for you.
The original Egyptian source of iron was probably meteoric anyway which would explain the term; however there have been iron, possibly steel, tools discovered at some ancient Egyptian sites - I think Khufu@Giza was one of the locations but I may have misremembered that. I say possibly because the material had a fairly high carbon content. You don't have to be just a language geek to be here!

I'd be interested in knowing whether the [stuff from the sky] construct has been carried over into other local languages to indicate iron ? Berber or other Magrebi languages perhaps. My level of Arabic is rusty but I never followed the Arabic word origins.

There is a verse in the Qu'ran which refers to 'sending down' materials but as I'm on a train at the moment with a dodgy internet connection any research will have to wait.

Sorry I couldn't resist the pun.

hehe yes, that's exactly what i'm arguing. I do not know if the actual Arabic says
that,
because there is another verse in the koran which says that Allah 'send down cattle.'
For
these two verses, many English translations have been made, and words such as
'provided'
'bestowed' have been used to replace 'sent down' in both verses.
